An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

My 40gb disk drive show error in system boot process, but after some time available in system bios. i was installed xpsp2 just 2 day ago and today it was corrupted. what i do ? please help me.... Sandeep...

Any 40GB disk-drive is probably more than THREE years old, and thus any "warranty" for the disk has EXPIRED. So, purchase a new disk-drive, and reinstall Windows, and take a sledge-hammer to the "old" disk-drive, so that any personal data on the disk can NOT be accessed.

You did not indicate that the 40 Gb hard drive had Windows installed on it and whether it was the original hard disk for this computer.
There is a possibility the 40Gb hard drive is faulty.
Try installing the 40Gb hard drive as a slave drive with the 80Gb drive as the master drive (don't forget to set the jumper on the 40Gb hard drive as Slave. Check the BIOS to see if it detects the 40Gb hard drive, and when the computer boots up, if it can see the 40Gb hard drive and opens the various folders and files, then the hard drive is OK.

Hello,

all you have to do is to simply set the jumper at the back of he hard disk, beside where the IDE cable and power enter into the hard disk.

Just keep setting till you put at the right position where the system recognizes it.

There is nothing wrong with your PC and hard drive, just set the jumper of the Hard disk and that should be all.

Take care.

Data recovery from External Usb Hard Disk

Fixya has received a growing number of USB connected Hard disk failures in recent months. It would appear they are a poor backup device, at least over the long term.

A couple of possibilities: First, disassemble the drive enclosure, and check the connections to the drive itself. I've seen one instance where an internal connection was just loose enough to cause a problem.

2. You could try removing the hard disk from the enclosure, and installing it as a second drive in a standard desktop PC. Interfaces must of course match- assuming it is an IDE interface, install it in a desktop with that drive connect system.

Master/slave jumpers must be also set correctly.

After this, using the drive management tool in Computer Management, try mounting the drive.

Beyond this, data recovery could be difficult at best. There are data recovery services available, but such is fairly pricey. You will have to decide just how valuable your missing data is.
