I can't get HP 92 ink cartridges for my 5440 deskjet printer in Japan. I bought several HP 132 with the understanding that this is the analog to the US HP 92. But the printer refuses to recognize it and jams up. So what can I buy in hp ink cartridges in Japan to use in place of the 92?

Large ink spill. Printer no longer recognized new black cartridge.

You can perform the Tap 41 Cartridge Health Diagnostics Test: [applies to HP Deskjet 6800/6900/9800]
http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1741 (refer to 2nd video to understand how to read the printed pattern)

1. With printer power on, press and hold the POWER button.
2. Press the Cancel (X) button four (4) times.
3. Press the RESUME button (Down Arrow) once.
4. Release the POWER button.
5. The Diagnostic Test Report should print.

--- A good HP 93/95/97/99 color cartridge should display 600 good nozzles, while a good HP 92/94/96/98 black ink cartridge should show 672 good nozzles. If the results yield anything different then the ink cartridge is likely damaged and will need to be replaced. Refer to 2nd video on how to read the printout: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1741

---- If the printer attempts to print the diagnostic test pattern (1 page) then the printer is generally considered operational and functional, if nothing is printed, but the printer attempts to print the pattern, then the tri-color ink cartridge is either empty, clogged or severely electrically damaged (black ink cartridge is not used). You can remove the tri-color cartridge, reactivate the tap 41 test and the printer will print the diagnostic test print in black ink (special "ink back-up mode").

PRINTER 5440, POOR PRINT QUALITTY HAS GONE FROM GREAT TO BARELY LEGIBLE, FAIRLY NEW CARTRIGAGES

Depending on the age of the printer, the service staion may need to be cleaned. The service station is where the cartridges "park" when they are not in use. Over time ink can collect in this area and therefore the ink cartridges do not get a thorough cleaning. I would go to HP's website and look for cleaning instructions for your printer model. Hope this helps

Paper Jam Issue with the HP Deskjet 5440

Clean the contacts on the HP Cartridge. I've had the same error before and i switched it to a fresh new cartridge.. works fine ever since. THen i decided to switch back to the old cartridge, same error as you but i cleaned the contacts on the cartridge, works for a while but done after a week. Problem is that the ribbon circuit is rusted and the printer doesnt recognize the ink anymore.

Also make sure you both have the ink cartridges in place. Make sure it is seated properly inside.

hope this helps!

HP deskjet printer compatible ink cartridges

They will not work. Although they may look similiar and may even fit into the cartridge holder. The internal circuitry is different and will not be read correctly by the printer. If they are all brand new or unopened, there is always ebay.

HP deskjet 5440

Never use alcohol, instead use distilled water or just water...
Seems like your cartridge need to be changed, maybe is very old in production date and ink is no more so fluid.
