I had the same issue. Turned out to be a blown capacitor on the power board.

Maxie66,

If your problem is only a blown capacitor, try this replacement. It worked for me - TV runs great now:

Good luck!

SYLVANIA 42 INCH 6842PEM DOES NOT TURN ON

The most likely the TV has a power supply related problem. The most common thing to go out is the circuit board that supply power to the screen. Commonly called a Backlight Inverter Board.
I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet.
If by chance the TV is still under warranty, go that route.
If not under warranty and If you have some electronic experience, you can purchase a Service Manual over the internet and diagnose the source of the problem and fix it by soldering in the new part. The Service Manual will give you circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists. Usually, cost under $20.

I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.

Hi I have a sylvania 6842pem 42 inch plasma. when turning the television on it makes a weird screeching noise then goes to stand by. what can the problem be thanks for the help

your transformer on your power supply is bad, i would recomend replacing the power supply, usually when the transformer goes bad , it damages other things on the board, should be around a 200$ part

Need transistor

Finally I have managed to fix my plasma 6842PEM. My problem was the SS (Sustain) Board and not the Power supply. This board is the vertical one to the right connecting to the Screen/Panel. I tested every component on the board and found one of the Transistors on the heat sink was bad, part # 2PG001. This board is made by Panasonic which can be replaced. I got the Transistor which only cost $20.00 including shipping.

To identify wether this is your problem, disconnect the cable comming from the power board and put on the TV, If the green light stays on then this is your problem.

Thanks all for your help.

Power Supply

No. They are entirely different. Panasonic was the supplier of the 6842PE and Funai was the supplier of the 6842PEM.

Looking for info on Sylvania 6842 PEM

This RadioShack capacitor is no good - too low a voltage rating. Try replacing it with this one, or something with the same values:

This fix worked for me. Best of luck

Sylvania 6842PEM

Have fixed a bunch of those as a Sylvania ASC. There is a small ceramic capacitor on the main power PCB that has ruptured. It must be replaced with a different part, a special type of capacitor, or it will just fail again. Sylvania had recommended replacing the main power PCB rather than repair because sometimes there was additional damage on the board, however replacing the capacitor fixed every one that came to us. I preferred that because some electrical voltages have to be adjusted if the circuit board is replaced with a different one.
