Try standing it up and gently pull on cord and release. It may rewind after a few tries. If it does fine, then just be careful how far you pull it out.
If it still won't rewind, you need to take it to an authorized Aerus Electrolux store and have the service tech have a look. There are a few things in the rewind assembly that could be causing it not to.

Have just purchased vax c90 vacuum cleaner, have a problem re-coiling the power lead.have followed instructions to press down on designated button, but power lead does not recoil.

On pressing the cord has to coil into the holder and if this wont happen there is some mechanical fault in the recoiler or spring.
You can pull the power cord once again outside and let it slide inside, repeat this sequence to allow the winder to respond and then it might pick up.

I had to replace the recoil assembly on Electrolux 2000. Recoil works fine by it-self but when vacuum is reassembled the recol does not recoil. Why?

You have assembled it incorrectly and the recoil unit is sticking against something preventing the recoil. It is still tensioned ? Have you checked?

Had a bad place on the chord about 6 feet from the end, cut the chord back to that point, put on a new plug but now it won't turn on. Is there a reset switch or fuse somewhere?

Yes, there is. It's a small white button located near on the back, near the left wheel. Unplug vacuum, then use the end of a paper clip to push in and reset.

Dead Miracle Mate Vacuum cleaner

You don't have to open the cannister. You can easily remove the black plastic collar through which the cord is supposed to emerge. The collar has a little springy tab that holds it in place. Once the collar is removed, you can reach in and grab the cord and pull it out.

Hoover Fusion Cyclonic

Ok, lfitz, I fixed my problem. First I called the Sears Service Center. They told me that I would have to drop it off there, and they would send it to Orlando to get looked at. The whole process would take about 2 weeks and who knows how much money. So I decided to become my own Hoover technician. It turns out that my original diagnosis was right about the chord that electrically connects the power on/off switch at the top of the handle to the rest of the vacuum. This was extremely easy to fix so please don't be scared away, although it does require a little philips-head screwdriver action. As always, make sure the vacuum is unplugged before you start. On the back of the vacuum, there is the hook that you wrap the electrical chord around for storage (the top one). On either side of that hook are two screws. Unscrew those. Now, the small piece of plastic that has the hook on it can be carefully pulled back, or removed if you need to. Inside, I found the detached end of a coiled black electrical chord that looks kind of like an A/C adapter. This chord should be plugged into the bottom of the metal shaft that slides in and out to allow you to adjust the height of the handle. Now, adjust the metal shaft so that you can plug the black chord back into the base. Push the chord in until you hear it click. Now, put the plastic piece back in place and put the screws back in and you're done. Plug it in and give it a try. I hope this helps.
