When I tried to record, it said "no disc". I tried a new disc, it formatted it, then said "no disc". I tried a previously recorded disc, same thing. I tried a commercially produced disc, same thing. So, A) what's wrong? and B) how do I fix it?

Since it is doing this with both old disks and new disks, it is not discriminating and we cannot say it is a media incompatibility issue. I just think that the Electronics may be fubar. Wait, I think it has lost the ability to format the disk. That is what your old new disks and new disks have in common - they are not formatted!
My brother had the same problem. Toshiba tech support said the disc was already formatted, so the DVD MENU option would not be available. He went straight to dubbing and recorded to the disc. After recording, the DVD MENU option was then available. He thought the disc was not formatted since it was straight out of the package and he always had to format other new discs. Perhaps your disc was actually already formatted?
You can get this if you´re using RAM-discs previously recorded/formatted on a different recorder. Clean the disc REALLY WELL and try inserting several times, it may pass.
try formatting the disc. it will erase everything on the disc and you can start fresh. try this with all the discs.if the problem keeps happening, try new discs.

I my DVD-HR735 wont recognise any discs at times, and is getting worse. I've now discovered (out of frustration) that if I tip the front up to between 30-45 degrees, it will play all the discs it says were unreadable. I've started jamming three dvd boxes under the front of the machine when i want to play dvds.
