Find the vertical IC and check for very small cracks on the solder joints of its pins and resolder (approx. 10 Pins). Also check in the same area for a 1 micro farad at 50 vdc capacitor that goes bad and replace it.
You likely have a LCD set there which may likely use a back light inside to light the image, get the room as dark as you can and with a flashlight illuminate the screen from a angle, with set on if you can see the faint image on the screen of the program you have a Backlight issue'
1. Voltage not there or not being switched on for backlight.
2. Actual back light bad.
If the image can be seen with a flashlight one of the above is the issue and your "picture will appear very faintly" also suggests this.
This is a common problem with this model you need a new main board. You can google around to find a part number, I would recommend getting the part number from the main board in the TV to guarantee compatibility. It will need replacement. If your a do it your self-er you can find more info and search parts here: Polaroid TLX03210b Main Board Parts and Repair Info
Try polaroid website itself to down load and print it ur self,if ur tv model still in the market.Or call their customers service phone number pay a fee. They'll sent it to u.Try website like Remotes.com to buy an original remote.
Take a flash light and point it close to the screen . do you see a picture.
You have a bad back light or inverter the powers the back light. in any rate here the unit will need a repair shop because these are hard to get to you have to dig.

Sounds just like a loose solder connection. The trick is finding it. I would start with the microchips and the large transformer. Otherwise, it could be a capacitor starting to short out. I would give both options a 50-50 chance to be the problem.
Isolate filament voltage from CRT,i.e. unplug
Crt socket from pix tube.Measure filament voltage on CRT PCB.If present, suspect bad pix tube.If missing, solder any/all connects in
filament circuit, meaning CRT board first then
main PCB.
