To fix the problem, you have to remove the new drum and clean the contact terminals of the drum and the printer. Run the printer utilities such as cleaning and alignments and send a test print page to make sure that the drum is installed properly.

What does a belt life ends soon mean, on a brother MFC 9440ch color laser printer?

Are you sure of the error message? The Brother printers that I have used have Drum Ends Soon and Change Belt messages.

The Brother MFC-9440CN has a belt that can be replaced. The Belt unit has an life expectancy of ~50000 pages. The belt unit is part BU100CL and costs a bit over $150 at office supply stores. Amazon.com and some other stores have the unit for under $100. http://www.amazon.com/Brother-BU-100CL-HL-4040CN-HL-4070CDW-Series/dp/B000SC245E is one source.

When the unit says Change Belt Unit, follow the directions from the manual's maintenance section to replace the belt unit. See page 178 (page 189 of the PDF) http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/files/dlf/doc002252/mfc9440_usa_usr_b.pdf . You have to remove the Drum and then the Belt Unit. Then slide in the new Belt Unit and replace the Drum unit. Then close the printer and turn it on. Finally reset the counter from the Machine Info sub menu (press Menu 8 4 and select the Belt Unit and press OK. Then press 1 followed by Stop/Exit).

If you mean the Drum Unit, that is part DR-110CL and costs over $175 at the office supply stores. Order this part when the Drum End Soon message appears and replace it if the print quality deteriorates (or when you have the new drum). The Drum Life is ~17000 pages. The steps start on page 166 (182 of the PDF). You need to remove the old Drum unit. Then remove the toner cartridges from the drum. Prepare the new Drum Unit, including putting the cartridges in the new Drum. Then replace the Drum unit and reset the counter.

I hope this helps.

I still receive the error message "Replace Drum", "Drum End Soon", "Drum Near End", or "Drum Stop" after I replace the drum unit with a new one.

did you do the reset procedure? if not it's in your owners manual under the section "replacing the consumables".

HL 4040CN is printing with a pink tint, it also says drum end soon and has said that for a while. What sould I do?

I have a similar problem now: magenta stain over the entire page when printing anything with any color (even just a hyperlink); B&W text is no problem. Not the PC; even the Demo Page from the 4040 menu does this. Updated the 4040 firmware tonight to latest (1.24, etc), but no better.Recently replaced the Magenta cartridge (official Brother cartridge), though saw this problem near end-of-life of the previous Magenta cartridge. Drum Unit status is 42%, so not expected to be near end-of-life.

Drum end soon

  1. When you replace the drum unit with a new one, or just want to extend the life of your existing drum unit, you need to reset the drum counter by completing the following steps:

  2. Press the + or - button to choose "Machine Info".
  3. Press OK to proceed to the next menu level, and then press the + or - button to choose
    "Reset Parts Life".
  4. Press OK, and then press the + button to choose "Drum Unit".
  5. Press OK two times.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

There is a warning said : " fuser unit end". What is the problem for that printer HL-4040CN? Even after I changed the drum unit and belt unit, there are still 2 warnings appearing to ask for...

first you are talking about the FUSER END message that means you have to change the FUSER and as for the DRUM and BELT you have to RESET the TIMER to tell the printer that it has been changed as well as for the FUSER those are consumable parts they have a life and the printer is programed to tell you to change them after so much copies.

Good luck!

I rec'd a fax this morning w/ a 2" solid black line on the right hand column. I also noticed that the screen reads "drum end soon." Are those two things related? And, what is "drum...

print out an internal report of some kind from the control panel. if line/band is still there, then drum most likely is the problem. sometimes however, that band can originate from the sending fax. "drum end soon" means your drum has come close to the 17,000 prints it is rated for and you need to get a DR110 drum unit. the drum unit is what your 4 toners sit in.

Brother 4040CN

This message will appear if the drum unit is near the end of its life. Use the drum unit until you have a print quality problem, then replace the drum unit with a new one

Getting a message saying change belt unit...what's that? is it easy to change? Replaced Drum Unit 6 months ago and I still get message Drum Unit end soon.

The instructions to reset the drum after changing are packed with the new drum, and the belt unit is the transfer belt that also wears out and needs changing periodically. The instructions are packed with that also and not hard to change.
