Sunon cpu fan stopped working and I bought another fan/heatsink combination because I couldnt find just the fan only. When I screw the heatsink onto the bracket it leaves a quarter inch space between the processor and heatsink. What do I do?

It sounds like you have the incorrect replacement. You do not want any space between heatsink and CPU.

Will the fan off it swap with your original?

Don't forget themal paste either.

Run part number 5188-7284 through Google. You can find fans for $50 - $100 (usually from the UK). HP gives out the wrong part number as they don't consider the one attached to the heat sink to be a fan. If you ask how many fans it has, they will state "only one." This is not true.

Replacing the heatsink, will it stop it from shuting down? if i use desk top fan blowing onto the inside its ok and works. i also have had blue screen come on

YES! The dissipation of heat is crucial. Thus making a heat sink / fan indispensable. That is most certainly the cause of the blue screen.

Furthermore, expect the system to fry in the near future without a working fan.

Is it possible to put the cpu back in the wrong way? i have just cleaned my comp & i removed the fan over the cpu & the video card? i put them back & now i cant get a signal to my monitor could...

If there is no activity when you power up then it could be the CPU.
Remove the CPU and check the CPU to see if you have not bent any pins. The CPU can only be installed in one position.
The CPU when removed usually sticks to the heatsink.
The CPU should be removed off the heatsink.
The CPU is locked onto the CPU chip holder, lift the locking level up to release the CPU or there may be a locking screw instead of a lever. Turn the screw anti-clockwise to release the CPU lock.
Insert the CPU in the chip holder and lock the CPU in place. If it a screw lock then turn the screw clockwise to lock the CPU in place.
Smear some fresh heat sink compound on the CPU and heatsink and place and then lock the heatsink in place.

I am receiving intermittent 51:10 errors. Is this the CPU fan?

If it is actually throwing error 5.1:10 (which looks more like a bible verse to me) it is the CPU fan. On the one I have experience with, it was a standard appearing avid heatsink/fan combination, but the catch was that not just any 60mm fan will do. The original was 5000 rpm, which is PWMed down until the CPU actually does some work, then when the MB asked for full cooling, the 1st replacement I used (4200 rpm) produced the same error - it just wouldn't turn fast enough for the firmware/bios (or whatever was monitoring the 3rd wire pulse output from the fan). Moral: just replace it with an exact 5000 rpm fan (or in my case, I found a 6000 rpm fan that works just fine). HP really wants to sell you a $35 fan, or have some technician charge you for a service call just to replace a fan. BTW, I recommend a Sunon MagLev, outside of paying for a ceramic bearing fan ($$), it is the longest lasting reasonably priced (
Please correct the 51:10 to 5.1:10 if this hits the mark.

The fan not working

Hi,

The CPU Fans, once they stop, you should only replace the entire FAN assembly, as it cant be serviced individually..The coil present in the mtor should have burned, this is the common cause for the fan failure

This heatsink & fan assembly can be bought for your system from the below link

http://www.skyline-eng.com/index.cfm

Under the window: Search by Machine click the dropdown menue & choose your system
Most CPU fans come with the heatsink. Try not to buy a fan that comes with a grill over it. That slows the fan down & makes the fan work harder.
Please leave me coment,if you need further assistance

I need a circuit diagram about heatsink and fan of the computer.

The heatsink doesn't use electricity, and the fan just has a motor inside that spins the blades, with a positive and negative wire going to it. Not much of a diagram to make...

Here's how a heatsink works though: http://www.overclock.net/faqs/115016-info-how-does-heatsink-work.html

Over heating

I would suggest you to check the heatsink and cpu fan,
it could be dirty, if it is dirty, clean it and it should work fine.

To see heatsink and cpu fan, open 4 screw on the back of your laptop.
remove the cover, remove the fan screw (3), remove fan,
remove 4 screw on the cpu heatsink, remove the heatsink.

if your heatsink and fan are clean, it could be something else cause the shut down.
in this case you should send it for repair.
