External Harddrive Ignorance...

Hello. And thank you for taking your time to read my problem.

I have this Belkin 4-Port USB Hub (F5U233-APL) on WIndows XP pro. sp3.

It works fine, except when I plug in my Seagate FreeAgent Go 100 gig hdd.
All other devices (iPod, flash drive, etc) works but the big external ones are not recognized. Nothing happens when it is plugged in. Its not just with the seagate; my other hdd, western digital external doesnt work either...

* Seagate FreeAgent Go, when plugged in, only blinks its led rapidly.

I've seen this happen with hubs being connected to external hard drives before.

Do you have a free usb port on the back of your computer you can plug it into?

That should fix the problem.

It could have something to do with how the power is distributed into the usb hub or how the serial port is asigned.

Are you plugging directly into the computer or using a USB Hub. Cheaper USB hubs have awful data throughput. I have one that I tried to plug a sd card reader into and it would take ten minutes for a 60 megabyte file. Connect directly to a port. Or download Samsung diagnostics and make sure that the drive is in proper working order. Verifying The Hard Disk Drive Is Working Normally

Belkin USB Hub 10117 Driver

Those old Belkin hubs did have these issues because of dodgy firmware.

To be honest, they were rather slow speed anyway and you can buy better hubs in the dollar store these days.

This is likely due to power consumption, if a hub doesn't have it's own power adapter, then it is drawing bus power from your computer, and will not have enough power to drive larger devices.

Why can't I access anything that was copied onto my Toshiba 500G external harddrive. The computer doesn't recognize the program that made any of it, even though it's the same computer.

It is very possible the voltage on your computer's USB port is not handling the load. I would buy a "powered" USB 2.0 hub, plug it into your computer's usb port and plug the harddrive into the powered hub.

Belkin 802.11a/b/g usb adapter

It sounds like the plug on the USB wireless dongle is bad or the usb ports in your computer are having problems. My Toshiba notebook does the same thing with the two usb ports near the front of the computer but works fine from the two on the back. When you have a flash drive plugged into the USB do you frequently get the new hardware found message as if you had unplugged and replugged the drive? If you have a powered external USB hub try plugging that in first then when that is stable plugging the USB wireless dongle into the hub rather than the computer. If it is stable then the problem is on the power pin in the USB port of your computer. Good Luck

Not Reading Peripherals - i-rocks IR-4100 4-Port USB Hub

If your looking for a good quality USB hub, i would go with a Belkin. They do cost more than most other hubs, but from the 8 years i have been at my retail store, they have had the lowest return rate of all that I have sold.
