why not tell the full story, and what you mean by the word format.
NO PC stated, it has a name and model.
what OS, XP, id guess windows but what windows
next questions is windows Ok, runs prefect, (XP wont)
install OFFice which one of the many, office XP , 2007 or?

ok its a laptop. it does have a name. for sure.
HP something ,it even has a full service tag on the bottom
or in the battery well. (battery out)

the only clue you provided is one word, LAG.

if you format the HDD, (hard disk drive)
you kill everything there, and must buy a new OS and install it.
(lacking HP media kit)
if the PC is 2006 and newer the F11 key works
power on , hit F11 and the recovery process replaces the OS.
fresh and all your personal data is gone.

google "hp format tool", make sure you open it up as administator. Do a full format.

Make sure you're using a microSD card, 2GB and smaller, and not a higher-capacity microSDHC card.

make sure you formated all non dos partitions and fat 32 partitions

If you can install it do it. This will surely clean up your computer, if you see everything is fine then there will be no need to reinstall windows.
Remember that a complete windows install will make you loose everything!
From the Windows XP desktop, click Start , All Programs , and then one of the following options:

1. HP Tools , and then HP PC System Recovery .
2.Hewlett-Packard , hp pavilion pc tools , and hp pc system recovery .

Make sure the SD card is unlocked. There's a tiny switch on the side. Put it into the camera. Under storage, when you select the card, also select format.

Insert your memory card into your computer's reader if you have one. If not, you can purchase a multi-format USB Memory Card reader from Amazon.com or Buy.com

2 Open up 'My Computer'. You should see it under the list of available drives.

3 Check its contents first to make sure that you have the right drive.

4 In 'My Computer', right-click on the drive and choose 'Format'.

5 Leave all the options as they are and click on 'Start'. This is a non-reversible process so make sure this is what you truly wanted to do in the first place.

6 Once the process is completed, take the memory card out and insert it into your Digital Camera or any other device. Try to browse to it to make sure it works fine now.

"CARD HAS WRONG FORMAT. Press OK to format card. " 

 

Possible cause is : The memory card is formatted for a different device such as an MP3 player.

 

Solution : Reformat the memory card (remove the card from the camera if you do not want it to be reformatted).
