The very basic step that I can suggest is this. Launch the Inspiron's internal troubleshooter utility. This may resolve problems in connecting to peripheral devices such as your mouse, printer or scanner. Click the "Start" menu button in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. Select "Help and Support". A dialog window will appear. Enter "hardware troubleshooter" in the search box and press the arrow icon on the right of the box. Double-click "Hardware Troubleshooter" in the next window. Then, follow the on-screen prompts. The utility will scan the laptop and attempt to resolve any identified hardware and software problems. Still no luck, this is the another self help option available for you. Just go for clicking on the URL Diagnose and repair sound playback problems automatically
Also verify Audio Settings are Turned Up and Not Muted

  1. Double-click the speaker icon in the system tray.
  2. Verify that the audio settings slider bar is at least midway for all audio selections.
  3. Remove any check marks that appear in the mute boxes

You have not mentioned your sound card make, searching for the drivers would be easy. Also ensure that in the Device Manager there is no yellow question mark which means a uncompatiable version of the drivers

Hope that helps !!!!

Cheers !

Anurag

Before formating, the sound driver was Via AC97 enhanced audio driver. After formating, I cant install back the driver even try downloading it from the internet. It did not work

It might be because, your computer shows your Audio Card as a " unknown device ".

First of all, install the chipset driver.

Then install the audio driver, and it should work.

Also make sure you select the right version of Windows

P4800pro installer problem

sounds like you need to install chipset / Sata / IDE drivers.

I have found that if your system locks up when tring to configure devices (and it makes it so you cannot use CD drive) booting into safe mode using f8 on boot and deleting the IDE drivers in device manager will force the system load some basic drivers for the next boot, and will allow you to temorarily use the CD drive, however you need to find the correct IDE / SATA drivers for this problem to be completely resolved as this is only a temporary workaround

No sound device

? mark means no sound driver install or errors in Device Manager. u can check ur mother board cd room or can search ur audio driver in web or below may be ur answer

Question: Where do I locate motherboard sound drivers?
Answer: Users who have motherboards with on-board audio (often with VIA, Realtek, or C-Media chipsets) may have issues with their audio or AC'97 errors in Device Manager. Often this is caused because the operating system has been reinstalled and the motherboard chipset drivers are not installed. To resolve this issue try following the below steps.
Let Windows redetect drivers
If you have not recently reinstalled Microsoft Windows it's possible that your audio drivers are simply corrupt. Open Device Manager and remove all devices under "Sound, video and game controllers" and any "Other devices". Once removed reboot the computer and let Microsoft Windows re-detect the audio drivers.
Motherboard chipset drivers
Reinstalling the motherboard chipset drivers will usually resolve this issue. If your computer came with a Motherboard CD, install the chipset drivers from the CD and the sound drivers if also available on the CD.
If you do not have a motherboard CD, obtain the motherboard chipset drivers from the motherboard manufacturer.
Sound card drivers
If after installing the motherboard chipset drivers you continue to have issues install the sound drivers. We suggest you download the sound drivers from the computer manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer.
A listing of motherboard manufacturers and their drivers can be found on our motherboard chipset drivers page.
