Are your battery contacts clean ? ? Can you open the film area and see if the mirror is up ? If the mirror is up, then you have problems. The camera did not go throught it's shutter program and the mirror has not been released to go down. Major repair that is way more expensive then a replacement camera. Same with the battery, something inside is not turning off (completing the shutter function) You can go with film or digital as the Pentax lenses work with both. If you change to Pentax (Ricoh ownes it now) digital, the old film flashes will not work. Need a newer digital Pentax flash for a Pentax digital camera.

have you tried changing the camera's settings back to default? in the camera's menu, find 'reset settings' or 'factory settings' or something like that to reset the camera settings.. you might have messed with some settings, otherwise it may be hardware failure, may be the LCD of your camera.. hope not so.. lol

When you say you can view pictures. Do you mean you can view them on the lcd on the camera itself or on your computer? It sounds like the CCD chip went bad most likely. If its not under warranty I would consider purchasing a new camera.
Thank you,
Lee

This is not a fault, Its just that the camera is using lots of battery power, this is common for many cameras.
Thankyou

If possible, check the charger output or the charge status of the batteries with a voltmeter. That will narrow the field for you. If the charger and batteries seem OK, your problem may be due to corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, your camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

Just curious if the new batteries are alkaline or rechargeables. If they're rechargeables, make sure they're fully charged, but since alkalines come with the camera, I would use those.
Couldn't find any information about the F689 in the view finder, but my advice would be to return the camera- it just sounds like there's something going on that would require servicing. It should at least be taking the pictures in AF mode.
