First step is to buy a keyboard...preferable new... the actually process to change it is not that complicated and do not require the need for to open the laptop totally ..You have to remove the front part ...that covers the hinges...and to do that look for screws(most laptops do not have ) ..and if they are not present ..than insert a plastic tool near the F1 and F11 one by one ..and it will snap out ..For some models you have to close the display ...and see that in the middle of the hinges..there is the line where this lid will bind with the rest of the body ...In that line you have to insert a flat tool like a screwdriver..and enlarge ...It will also snap out ..cause the lid is clipped on .. After removing the hinges cover lid...there will be exposed a few screws and you have to remove them ..and once the screws removed...the keyboard will slide an inch towards the display ..and after that you can get it out ...carefully!..it has a ribbon to connect to the board...and it is quite short and sensitive...You need to unplug it ..by removing the protective cover..(its just some kinda device to lock it in place ..Its different from a model to another but if you take a look you will figure out how to unlock the ribbon ...After that place the other one ..and slide it in place ...screw it down ..snap the hinge;s cover back ..and go for it .. here is a link with some guidance http://www.insidemylaptop.com/replace-damaged-keyboard-dell-inspiron-1525-laptop/ its for an Inspiration model ..but I wanted to make an idea what I'm talking about ..cause there are pictures on it ..and the procedure is the same ..even if the hinge cover may look different ..
Buy a panel puller at Autozone and pry it loose AT THE BOTTOM NEAR THE HINGE first. If you accidentally break the clip, it won't be noticable. Do it on top first, and you're door panel is in your lap everytime you drive. Most panels have clips that just snap in. In theory, they just snap out, but they often break in the process. Be prepared to go to the parts store to buy replacement. Cheap, but can be a pain in the ****. Good luck.
I just fought this same battle and have emerged victorious! The roller cam that the black rubber belt fits around is kind of "C" shaped in cross-section. The roller has left and right hinge-pins on one end of the "C" and snaps on the other. Looking at either side of the casing that the roller mounts in, you will see the end of the hinge-pin and a typical sqeeze clip like those often found on bigger laser printer rollers. I'm sure this was designed so that you should be able to sqeeze the left and right clips simultaneously which should release the snap end of the "C" and allow it to hinge out away from the casing. Unfortunately, it appears that the designer's good intentions were never tested. If your roller is like mine, it does not freely release by just sqeezing the clips. It was a bit awkward but while squeezing one of the clips, I used the tip of a small screw driver to pry loose the snap on that side. The trick is to hold that snap out away from it's seated position while you perform the same procedure on the other side. With both sides pryed away from their seated position you should be able to hinge the roller with black rubber belt away from it's case and remove it. In lieu of buying a replacement belt I simply rotated the existing one to expose the unused part and snapped it back in place. Voila!
