The Dynex adapter does not have any numbers on it. It was the one that is only about a foot in length and has a square center piece that houses the conversion electronics. Standard 9 pin RS-232 male plug on one end and the standard USB plug on the other end. I purchased it within the last month at BestBuy here in Austin TX.
I had a similar problem connecting Bernina 153 to computer with XP. I had to purchase a newer USB-serial adapter with a driver compatible for XP. Installed the driver and connected to machine just fine.
Please note: the serial end of the USB-serial adapter must either not have the 2 side pins (one on each side of the center 9-pin section) or must have pins that can be screwed back out of the way. The Bernina's serial outlet does not have spaces for the 2 side pins.
The Keyspan USB-serial cable recommended on some Bernina forums has fixed side pins and will not connect to the Bernina 153. I am using a Gigaware cable (Radio Shack).
I hope this post will save someone time and trouble in the future!
The connector pins are screws and they can unscrew from the housing. I just got an older Artista 180 running with Windows 7 and the free software from Bernina (ARTLINK V6). I used a Dynex USB to Serial port converter I got at BestBuy. I had tried an older USB to Serial adapter but it kept telling me Failed to connect to serial or something like that. Anyway I knew it had to be the serial decive I used since it was old and I had trouble connecting other items to it in the past. Plugged in the Dynex one and it configured as COM4. I setup the new Bernina software to use COM4 and violla! It worked again. Downloaded about 20 designs in the machine and the memory card that plugs into the embroidery machine. Should keep my wife busy for a time!
I have the same problems connecting the 180 in Windows 7. I want to make sure I get the right cub to serial converter. What is your Dynex model number?
Thanks
Frank
