Hello,
Most of the time we walk into a shoe store and help ourselves. With an elderly lady or man ask an assistant on site and they will help with things like proper heel type (No higher than 1 1/4 inch), width of the toe (roomy but supportive) and the width at widest part of the foot. Maybe a cushioned interior would be nice. Most of these guidelines will be valuable for the diabetic or just the aging foot structure. For the sole of the shoe, choose a leather or a somewhat smooth surface...you can rough up a smooth surface, however if you have a rough or patterned tread, you can't easily smooth that out and it may cause your Mother to trip. PS I have elderly feet and these are my guidelines!! Take care!---Suzan
Proper shoes for elderly women can reduce their falls risk, which is one of the leading causes of injury for older women. There are certain features you should look for in a shoe that makes it "safe" - reduces falls risk. These include: 1.Heel (upper) - A firm heel collar to provide stability. 2.Laces - Laces to ensure the shoe holds onto the foot while walking. 3.Heel (bottom) - A bevelled heel to prevent slipping and a broad flared heel to maximize contact with the ground. 4.Sole - A textured sole to prevent slipping. 5.Midsole - A thin firm midsole so the wearer can feel the ground underneath.
