Depends on how the Slingbox is configured. It should be set up to use DHCP and try to get an IP from your router, either by wireless or by hardwired ethernet.
I would help if you could details how your network is configured.
On your old desktop, go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings make sure no check on boxes there. Click OK and Apply. Click on General tab, click on Delete File (delete all offline content), Clear History and Delete Cookies. Click Apply and OK.
If you have a home network, try a Print Server with parallel port. You will connect the printer to the print server via parallel, and the print server to a network hub/switch/router (any of the listed) via a network cable, and the computer to the hub/switch/router via network cable or wireless.
Cost should be around $20 - $60 depending on make/model.
-- who is your internet service provider -- what is the operating system of your computer? -- is this working fine before or is this a brand new router
you may try this and see if this help solve your problem. make sure your computer is directly connected to the router
Step 1: Shutdown the computer. Step 2: reset the router while power on then Unplug the router’s power cable. Step 3: Unplug the Broadband modem’s power cable and wait for 30 seconds. Step 4: Plug in the Broadband modem’s power cable and wait for its lights to appear stable. Step 5: Plug in the router's power cable once the modem’s lights appear stable. Step 6: Power on the computer on and configure the router settings Step 7: test the Internet connection.
if this still didnot work, upgrade the firmware of your router
note:
configuring the router settings will depends who is your provider. if your isp is dsl you need to configure your ISP username and password on the router. if your router is a cable no need to change any settings on the router. it should automatically work

i have a similar problem with SMC7904WBRA2 Barricade router. I can only intermittently connect from my Vista Home Basic PC to the router. Most times I am unsuccessful.
Given the model of the router is known can you provide the manufacturer and model of the computer or wireless adapter if separate. Second step -- eliminate problems one step at a time. Do you have a computer with a known working network card that requires a wire? Use it with a wired connection to test if the router (the router has 4 ports for network wires on it) is working. If the Vista machine has a network card try it with a wire, too. Let me know if the router is working with a computer wired to it.
We will try additional steps after I get the answers to these.
Connect the home wireless network router box to the main PC through an ethernet cable with the PC powered off and the home wireless router powered off, then power on the PC & the router. Vista should locate the new wireless network and follow the windows vista network setup procedures. After the wireless network has been detected you then while the second PC's power is shut off you connect dongle adapter to the PC power on and XP will locate the new adapter. You will probably have to enter your networks pin for the connection.
