Air conditioner turns on then shuts itself off immediately

Our air conditioner was running fine all day then our check filter light came on. We shut it off and cleaned the filter. When we put the filter back in and turned the A/C unit back on it will not stay running. The power light is on but it does nothing. It shuts itself off after we turn it on. I can't understand it. It was running fine prior to changing the filter. All we did was pull the filter out and put it back in. HELP Please!!!

There's something wrong with your aircon. Usually the lights will start to blink. Depending on the brand and model, the number of times it blinks will give you an error code which tells you what's spoilt. You may like to check this out http://www.astiquer.com/blinking.html

Open the front end of the blower.
You will find tow filters that slide out.
Clean them with water and replays them.

Go to the outside one, take a hosepipe and run a strong stream of water thru the radiator until its clean.

This will solve your problem.

is the fan out side running when you are getting cool air? IF so check the out door coill is it clean, If not the fan could be over heating because it is pulling to hard. you should be able to feel the air 2' above the unit.

Suction pressure compressor is to low due to loss of refregerant.

Outside a/c fan quits but compresser still runs
it sounds like the fan is over amping itself and shutting down on thermal overload check the amp draw during running time and compare it to the sticker on the outside panel it should be running .9 amps, and it will over heat if it runs around 1.2 amps or above

Unit freezing up and shutting off
Ordinarily air conditioners do this when they are too big,(BTU wise), for the area being cooled. They will shut off to prevent system damage. There has to be enough warm air drawing back to the unit to keep the coils from freezing up. A more rare scenario would be an overcharge from the factory and manifest itself immediately.

(1)Check compressor contactor or relay if it stock in the close position
(2)Check for welded contact points
(3)Check switch control for defect
(4) Check if compressor contactor still geting power when it is off
