I just installed two ink cartridges in my HP Photosmart 7250 and every time I try to print it says the yellow cartridge is empty and it will only print in black, not color, but when I select black only it prints all the colors fine and the ink levels show they are all O.K. The printer also says if I don't replace the yellow cartridge (which is full) printing will eventually stop. How do I fix this?

I just had the same problem on my printer and found that resetting the printer solved the problem.

  1. To reset this printer, make sure the printer is on. Unplug the printer without turning the printer off.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Hold down the # and 6 button while plugging the printer back in. Keep holding the # and 6 down while the printer turns on. After a bit, on mine there was a picture of the power symbol that appeared on the printer display.
  4. When the power symbol appears on the printer display, take your fingers off the # and 6 button.
  5. Push the power button to turn the printer off. Push the power button again to turn the printer back on. The printer will take some time to go through some preparation. When the preparation is complete, the printer will recognize that the cartridges are full.

Won't print after replacing cartridges

The following text copied from HP website to tackle this problem. minimtop.gif Follow the instructions below to install the print cartridges. NOTE: If you are installing ink cartridges in the unit for the first time, be sure to use only the print cartridges that came with the unit. The ink in these cartridges is specially formulated to mix with the ink in the print head assembly at first-time setup. s.gif Installing the print cartridges minimtop.gif
  1. Verify that the unit is on.
  2. Open the ink cartridge door. Figure 1: Opening the ink cartridge door c00718797.gif
  3. Squeeze the gray tab below an ink cartridge slot to release the gray latch and then lift the latch. Figure 2: Lifting the latch c00721793.gif 1 - Ink cartridge latch for the black ink cartridge 2 - Ink cartridge latches for the color ink cartridges NOTE: The ink cartridge areas are color-coded for easy reference. From left to right, the ink cartridges are black, yellow, light cyan, cyan, light magenta, and magenta.
  4. Remove the new ink cartridge from its packaging.
  5. Hold the ink cartridge by the handle and then slide the ink cartridge into the empty slot. NOTE: Make sure that the ink cartridge is inserted into the slot that has the same shaped icon and color as the ink cartridge. The copper-colored contacts should be facing the printer as the ink cartridge is inserted. Figure 3: Inserting an ink cartridge c00721795.gif
  6. Press down on the gray latch until it clicks into place. Figure 4: Closing the gray latch c00721796.gif
  7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for each ink cartridge that needs to be replaced. NOTE: All six cartridges must be installed. The printer will not work if an ink cartridge is missing.
  8. Close the ink cartridge door. Figure 5: Closing the ink cartridge door c00718798.gif

How do I reset the ink levels?

We have an issue of missing or replace yellow cartridge. Please feel free to contact the HP support for replacement of the printer, if the printer is in warranty status. HP would replace the printer.
