Makita it's a rubish brand with a non good speed trigger. consider buying another brand. I have worked on large project and we had to scrap 80 out of 85 makita drills in 2009 so for me makita deserve a bad name. we replaced them with dewalt and never got 1 faulty.

Check what gear you in, the Makita will smoke if you exert to much torque, consider buying a decent impact driver? If its not under much pressure then it may be a fault with the drill. I have owned one and it was reliable but sometimes under-powered for an 18volt compared with others on the market.
Hope this helps

If the smoke came from the main housing it sounds like the motor, take it to a service agent. It's a good machine.

Makita ML902 Flashlight how to open case housing to repair

Makita ML902 - great flashlight. but I wanted to upgrade the lamp to LED, and found that the POLARITY was wrong . so i HAD to open the dern thang. the 'special tool' and 'keep in-house' conspiracy had me 'fuming' ... turns out if one were to mark the EXACT spot that the pivot occurs with a felt pen, by drilling a small (sized) hole on each side, (stop as soon as the bit is thru! the shiney material that you stop at are lamp straps) then pressing 2 stiff objects from both sides, the head pops off ! one more screw is uncovered, making it an even 4 screws holding it all together. When i opened the case up, one wire wasn't even soldered to the switch ! aargh. so - swapped polarity, re-soldered the connections, add a bit of fresh solder, re-assemble, voila! I love the 9 volt cases, upgrading everything to 12v and 16v lithium 18650 cells. these old Makita ensembles are great! saw, drill, angle drill, light...

Makita 2071 Smoking, probably overheated but still working

When an AC motor is stalled, very high currents pass through the motor windings and melt the insulation on the windings; the smoke was the result of the motor winding insulation being melted. This causes a reduction in motor torque and premature failure.

You should suggest that your neighbor buy you a new drill and he keep the one that he ruined.

The charger you need is Makita charger DC1801. If you do a search for "DC1801" on ebay you will find heaps of those chargers on there!

The DC1801 charger will charge the 6347D 18v 2Ah Makita NiCad pod-style battery.

Makita cordless driver drill model-6347d. ni-mh rechargeable nickel metal hydride battery 1834 18v 2.6ah will not stay charged. battery charter dc 1804- works great.

You say will not stay charged? Over what time period? Are you aware Nicad and NiMh rechargeables discharge naturally at 1% per day so where does that leave your power tool after 3 months? Furthermore they only have around 1000 charges in their useful life so you can immediately see how these tools are not for intermittent(ie handyman) use.
