Brown liquid huh? A small amount may be a blown electrolytic capacitor. Take a look around for a component that's about the size of a pencil eraser and also brown. Or - just some wires where it used to be. This can happen in storage if temps are too high or low and it can just plain happen. If there's a LOT of brown stuff, then its probably external contamination. Can you run your finger across it and give a sniff - see oily stuff on your finger? In that case, you've got a serious clean up job ahead. Tons of contact cleaner and/or alcohol and lots of careful work are in your future. DO NOT power up anything until you've totally cleaned up everything - it will only get worse if you power it up and things can short out.

Thanks for that. How much liquid would there be if it was the capacitor? It sounds like that could be it. I'm not sure it could be anything external, as it was fine when I packed it away, and nothing got near it in the meantime. Originally I had thought that it could be some kind of oil from the motor, as that could have explained why the platter was still turning. Also, if it is a cleanup job I need to do, where would you suggest to start? I'm not particularly electrically minded so I'm reluctant to start opening it up and tinkering around! If you could give me any help with this it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again.
