What does 'insert cartridge on right' mean? i inserted new black ink the same way i always do but i'm having two problems - one - i can't get it to stop blinking its orange (!) saying 'insert cartridge on right' even though it's inserted and printing. however the second problem is that the new ink is bleeding on the clear adhesives i use at work - we've been using these stickers for many years so it isn't it's surface. any thoughts how to fix these problems?? Thanks, Emily

Clean the golden contacts inside the printer where the ink cartridge contacts touch.

SOURCE: HP Deskjet 5740 printer both orange lights are blinking and wont print

  • I replaced both carts with HP brand, no joy.
  • I cleaned the cart/printer connections, no joy.
An interesting aside is that if one or the other cart is removed, the appropriate LED goes out and the other blinks. At least some of the sensing circuitry sees the cart.

Anyone have a schematic of the cart/printer electronics?

SOURCE: inserted new cartridges..orange light still on

Try re-seating the ink cartridges. A lot of times, the electrical contacts on HP's ink cartridges do not make a solid connection.

SOURCE: Printer says to insert black print cartridge in right stall

Refer to printer manual as some of them require you to reset the software to accept new cartridge.

Manual here if you do not have one

I have inserted a new black ink cartridge (34) and get an error message 'left cartridge missing, insert black or colour photo cartridge' have peeled label off and reinserted several times but still...

Make sure you are inserting a genuine Lexmark cartridge. Try to insert a different known working cartridge, maybe your old black cartridge, to determine if your new cartridge is faulty. If inserting your old black cartridge gives you a message saying "very low ink" or something to that effect, then most probably there's something wrong with the new black cartridge. Have it replaced with a new one from the store where you bought it from. You may also contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for assistance.

Just tried installing a new photo31 ink cartridge and I am getting right cartridge incorrect message.

If you are using a photo cartridge, in your case the #31 cartridge, insert that in the left carrier where the black cartridge is. Make sure your color cartridge is inserted in the right carrier to continue printing.

The black ink doesn't print. We have brother cartridges in our printer DCP 385C, and until recently it always told us when ink was running out. now it doesn't print the black ink at all and it doesn't tell...

Make sure the protective tape covering the new cartridge has been COMPLETELY removed then reinsert. Your printer should tell you that a new cartridge is inserted and ask to print a test page, align etc. Otherwise your cartridge may have a faulty chip which simply wont read.
In which case you need to return it and get a replacement.

My printer Brother DCP 165C cannot print in black ink.

Your black printhead is blocked.
The printhead is deep inside the printer and has to be taken out by the expert and cleaned with the help of 'steam' and hot water. This is because not using the printer for a long time. or using low grade refill inks.
Please select new cartridge only if you are inserting a new cartridge or fully refilled cartridge. Otherwise use old cartridge option. Brother printer has a mechanical sensor and not the electronic chip in the ink cartridges.
After inserting the old used cartridge if you choose 'new cart' option it will show the "Full" ink. You can still print from the exhausted ink cart after covering the sensor in the middle by a piece of paper in emergency.

Remove the tape from cartridge.
Caution: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts of the cartridges. then hold on the top HP logo. Insert it (tri-color cartridge- left slot)-(Black cartridge- right slot) make sure you push the cartridges firmly until they snap into place.

"Insert New Cartridge" Error Message

Sorry for the dumb & obvious question but did you remove the protective tape from the cartridge before inserting it. If so, then try returning the cartridge for a new one, you may have gotten a bad one. If problem continues you may have a printer problem. Also, you could reinsert your old one and see if you get the same error or an out of ink error. If you get an out of ink error the problem is most likely with the new cartrideg...if you get same error, the problem is most likely with printer.
Good luck.
