Easiest way to find a vacume leak is to get some soapy water in a spray bottle and when engine is running look for any appearing bubbles that would signal a leak. All vacume hoses are simular in looks black rubber ranging in size from pencil to thunb in diameter. Vacume leaks are time consuming to repair and occasionally frustrating just be patient and listen with your ears.
A diagram will be in a haynes or chilton book for your year make and model you can get this at almost any auto parts store.

I think the coil pack is bad on my 97 escort, it shakes violently and stalls. Engine light came on cylinder 4 misfire. Changed spark plugs and wires. Need to know where the coil pack is and how to replace...

The coil pack should should be the device you plug your spark plug wires into. if it is round, then it is a distributor not a coil pack, if it is square and looks like there are relays coming of it, it is a coil pack. to replace this, you simply mach the wires to the corresponding diodes on the new device, unscrew the old one and screw in the new one. plugging in any connecters you might have forgotten.

The idle on my mustang gt is going up and down when i go to stop without touching the throttle. it doesn't do it all the time but has been doing it often lately

Sounds like either you have a vaccum leak or the idle air control valve is acting a fool. I'd start by looking for a vaccum leak. This is easy to do. Take a can of carburetor cleaner and spray it around all the vaccum lines, where they are connected to something and on the ends of every hose. If you spray one line and your idle speed increases for a moment, you've found the leak. just replace the hose. Shouldn't cost more than $3. That's where i'd start. Sounds like you have a minor vaccum leak.

1989 ford f250 a/c only comes out through the defroster

More them likely you have a vaccum leak, check vaccum line that gose into fire wall under hood make sure it has vaccum, if don't find vaccum hose and repair, if it does check vaccum hose under dash follow it make sure it's plug in, if it is could be a bad vaccum pull off or bend door or the selector switch. Good luck hope this was helpful.

1997 Chevy Cavalier is backfiring and sputtering sometimes on take off or acceleration. Any ideas what the problem is? New fuel regulator, all new injectors, done alot to this car.

Here is a list of some things that can cause it,
Emmissions system not functioning properly,
Faulty secondary ignition system
Fuel injection system in need of adjustment
Vaccum leak at fuel injectors, around intake manifold, or vaccum hoses
Clogged fuel filter
Weak fuel pump
To test for a vaccum leak, get a can of starting fluid, with the engine running, spray around the intake manifold, the vaccum hoses, connections and fittings, where ever you spray and the engine rev's up a little, you found a leak.

Service Engine and Service Vehicle lights

You can generally find a vaccum leak by pressure testing the system. Most auto parts stores sell a vaccum tester relatively cheap. Or you can take it to a shop and they will pump your sytem full of a uv sensitive die and then use a black light to find the leak. If it says vaccum leak at engine on the vent solenoid then all you need is the schematic of your vaccum system to find the solenoid and you should find your leak theoretically.
