Hitachi 55HDS69 55 in. Plasma Television Logo
Posted on Jun 05, 2008

Black out?!?!? I was watching my Hitachi 55" plasma TV and the screen went black. I still have audio. There was no sound when the screen went black, it just blanked out. I have read that it may be the power supply?!?! All help is appreciated.

I turned on my 55HDS69 a week ago and WAAH-BOOM, No more picture but the sound was fine. The resolution underway at a local repair shop is to replace the upper & lower buffers. The TV is 2 yrs and nine months old. I did not buy the extended warranty as I expected a $3000+ TV to last longer than 3 years especially since my house is like a climate controlled class 40 clean room and teh TV is not over used. The parts are ~$225, The labor is ~$225. Hitcahi would have sent the parts for free had I been within the 2-year window (1 yr regular warranty + 1 yr grace period). It was absolutely silly of me to think HITACHI would do the right thing and send me parts at 2 yrs and 9 months (sarcasm). I can tell you one thing......There is NFW I will ever buy a Hitachi product again and that includes anything even affiliated with Hitachi (inc. imbedded electronics). I will steer every person on the planet away from them in the future. My original plan was to ship the TV to the Hitachi CEO to make a point but the Hitachi folks don't deserve that kind of respect (Unless it blows out again) :(

I finally got information from the repair shop. Apparently it is the upper and lower panel drive. The parts are supposedly not more than a couple hundred dollars, though I'll let you know when I get the bill. I do want to say that Hitachi was great when I called them. Even though my plasma is out of warranty by a few months, they agreed to pay for parts if I pay for labor. That just might keep me buying Hitachi products despite the issues I've had with my 2 plasmas.

My apologies for taking so long to get back with you. I hadn't revisited this forum in some time.

Since my TV was out of warranty by about 6 months, I called Hitachi at 1-800-hitachi. Their hours are:
    10-1 Saturday
    9:30-6 weekdays

The person who authorized Hitachi paying for my parts was Keith, but I called back and spoke with an equally helpful person afterward. I was impressed with the customer service. I told them that I had chosen Hitachi over other brands because I believed in the product, but I was frustrated with my expensive plasma failing so soon out of warranty. I also shared with them that I was seeing several other people on this forum experiencing the same problem. They agreed to pay for parts and I would pay for labor.

My local repair shop charged me $199.95 total for labor, which wasn't too bad. It took longer than I had hoped to get the part, over a week, and a couple more days to do the repairs, so that was a little frustrating. The TV is working great now, and I am happy with the outcome (I'd be happier if it hadn't failed at all, but overall I thought the handling was fair).

Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

    Take care,
    Gabrielle

Same problem and they replaced every board in the TV and the power supply. New plasma screen needed and cost was $3000 so they bought back my TV since I had the extended warranty. TV had maybe 20hrs use on it. I'm getting a 52" 1080p Sony LCD. Plasma never again
