What usually breaks is the door open lever.

On a counter top model, the outer cover will need to be removed to diagnose and repair this. On an over-the-range model, only the control panel needs to be removed.

Please unplug the oven first.

If you or someone you know wants to look into this, we have critical safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Once it is apart, you'll be able to see how the door open button would press against the door open lever, which would then lift up against the door latch heads (hook-like projections on the door) and the door should open.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

Sharp Carousel Microwave door won't open, button broke

Take it to a Discount Appliance or Used Appliance store and have them repair it. There they will have the parts that are used and cheaper to repair than hiring an Appliance Service Technician.
Option 2
Take the microwave apart and go to www.searpartsdirect.com and type in your model number and find the broken part and part number. Then order the part through ApplianceZone.com or ApliancePartsPro.com. Later when parts arrive at your door... install theparts yourself and save money!

I'm unable to open the microwave door on model Sanyo EM-S8586W as it appears the spring is broken. How do I remove the cover so I can replace the spring please?

make this steps and fix it. God bless you

  1. Open leverCheck your microwave lever to determine if it is damaged. If it is broken, simply replace the lever to get your microwave door fully functional again.
  2. Door springResponsible for keeping downward pressure on the door hook, the microwave door spring can begin to malfunction. If this part is broken and prevents you from opening your microwave door, replacement is necessary.
  3. Door latchOne reason your microwave door may not open properly is a broken door latch. Located inside the microwave, the door latch manipulates the door hook to keep the door closed for safety and top performance. If broken, the door could become stuck in the locked position.
  4. Door hookIf your microwave door will not release properly, the door hook could be damaged. Located inside the door, the door hook is made of plastic and prone to breakage with extended use or age. As this part is unable to be repaired, the only option is to replace it.
  5. Button or button springIf the microwave door will not open, it could be an internal failure of the button or button spring. If it is determined that either of these parts is the source, both are replaceable and it is recommended that they be installed at the same time.
  6. Handle actuatorIf the microwave door will not open the plastic handle actuator could be broken. Connected between the door button and the door latch assembly, this plastic part could become damaged and brittle over time, which makes breaking inevitable. If this occurs, replace the handle actuator to get your microwave fully functional again.

Microwave shuts off by itself

The microwave has a safety door switches (2-3 micro switches)
The door mechanism should hit these micro switches. If you can open the machine, you can see that these micro switch has a holder that you can adjust and tighten to make sure that the hook of the door should activate them.

Whirlpool Microwave GT4175SPS0 - door button is jammed or spring broken. I cannot open the door anymore and there is food inside the microwave. Any ideas?

This model appears to be a counter top model (if not, please reply back, since procedure differs).

You will first need to unplug the unit and remove the outer cover.

Then you'll be able to see inside where the door open button presses on the release lever, which lifts up the hook-like projections (latches) on the door so that the door will open.

Usually the part that breaks is the release lever.

You can find helpful exploded views for similar models (such as the GT4185) here, but your best bet is to call the number at that site.
