Try the mouse in a different computer.
If it works, it's the "settings" for the mouse in your copy of Windows that have changed, i.e., pushing the LEFT mouse button is *NOT* "associated" with any specific "action".
Or, shutdown your computer.
Disconnect the mouse from the computer.
Flip the mouse over.
Look for any screws holding the mouse together.
If you find some, undo the screws, and split the mouse apart.
Inspect the mechanism that "clicks" when you push the LEFT mouse-button.
Remove any dirt/dust.
Reassemble the mouse.
Reconnect it to your computer.
Try it.
If it still does not work, try the mouse in a different computer.
If it still does not work, responsibly recycle it, and buy a new mouse.
Thank you for this already. I should have been more accurate. It is not an external mouse but the left button of the mouse pad not working, not responding, while the left button mouse pad in the config panel is selected on "click". Any more advise? Thanks
Unless you have a lot of experience in disassembling and repairing notebook computers, it's time to take the computer to a qualified technician, for professional trouble-shooting, replacement of the touch-pad, and disassembly/reassembly/testing.
Or, buy a small USB-mouse, and use it instead of the touch-pad.
Or, if you never use the "right-click" action, configure that action to be associated with the RIGHT mouse-button on the keypad (instead of the LEFT mouse-button), and retrain yourself to push the RIGHT button.
