Need lock washers.

  • jimbe1120 Jan 27, 2011

Lift seat to vertical - lift straight up with force - lift off small chrome covers - suggest putting thin rubber betweeen fitting pins and pan - tighten to fit.

Jimbe1120 - agreed, no need to undo the screws on the seat itself (unless you want to make a lot more work for yourself like I've just done!) just pull vertically off pins.

Basically, the circular chrome covers come apart to reveal a Phillips head bolt heads and the tightening takes place from above.. The wing nut below the porcelain becomes captive with a self locking nut when tightened from the top. If the covers do not separate, then the hinges have been overtightened when fitted. First remove the seat (obvious screws). Then remove seat cover by waggling side to side until male hinge fulcrum one side comes out of female cover followed by the other. Turn the whole hinges anticlockwise, while stopping the covers turning too, a couple of threads at a time until the covers have room to separate and the bolt heads become visible,. Re-fit the cover and seat. Align seat to bowl. Lift seat and tighten Philips heads, check seat alignment to bowl and re-overlap chrome covers. Job done. Dave Thursfield

How to install a toilet

Things needed; set of johnnie bolts, wax ring, water supply tube, open end wrenches.
insert the flat head of the johnnie bolts into the groove of the floor flange so the threads are pointed straight up. Install the wax ring directly onto the floor flange. Set your toilet bowl down on top of the wax ring so the johnnie bolts stick up through the holes at the bottom. Install the washers and nut to secure the toilet to the floor. Depending on the type of toilet, you may or may not need to manually install the tank to bowl gasket and tank to bowl bolts. Set tank onto bowl and tighten the bolts. Usually a 1/2" wrench. Do not over tighten because the porcelain will break. Install the water supply to the bottom of the tank and then tighten it to the water shutoff valve. Install the seat, and your all set.

I have a toilet which is a one peice. The toilet seat has come loose and the bolts have dropped to the floor. I can not fit the seat back as the pieces that i would use to tighten the seat are on the floor...

In no case would you ever have to pull a toilet to get to seat bolts. My guess is if you take the tank lid off and look inside there youll see the bolts . If not you can buy another toilet seat with new bolts or just get the bolts to fit your seat and tighten it down.Forget about the old bolts unless they become a problem with the flushing of the toilet. Hope this helps

Loose toilet seat

If the screws don't tighten the either the screw threads are stripped or the attachment nut is stripped. Take the screw and nut to any hmoe repair center and get new ones. remember don't over-tighten then screws as this will crack the unit.

Reach under the bowl of the toilet and feel for a rather large wing-nut bolt on each side of the toilet. You must hold these with your hand and tighten the screws with a screwdriver. If you don't hold these wingnuts, then the screws will keep spinning forever and never tighten. Run your hand directly below the toilet just below the screws and you will find them. VERY EASY FIX!
