I need tray 2 to be the default setting for this printer. It always reverts back to tray 1 everytime I try to print.

Paper Handling Issue -
Hit Menu
Arrow down to Paper Handling and hit the green check
hit the green arrow to go into Tray 1 size - arrow down to envlope #10 hit the green arrow to save
arrow down
hit the green arrow to go into Tray 1 type - arrow down to envlope hit the green arrow to save
arrow down
hit the green arrow to go into Tray 2 size - arrow down to letter/legal (depends on what your using) hit the green arrow to save
arrow down
hit the green arrow to go into Tray 2 type - arrow down to plain (assume that your using plain paper) hit the green arrow to save

also pull out the paper tray and confirm the guides (where you can adjust from letter to legal etc)
is set correctly.

That should take care of it unless the document you are tring to print is a different type of paper size.

Printer will not kick out document automatically, attention lite keeps flashing. tray 2 selected but always defaults back to tray 1

Sounds like you have a mismatch in the paper you are trying to print on and the paper that is loaded in the printer. HP printers look to feed paper from tray 1 anytime the computer settings don't match the paper loaded in tray 2. Tray 1 is the multi purpose tray and prety much any size paper can be loaded in tray 1. Double check your document settings and double check the paper size loaded in the paper tray 2 and make sure they match. Also try printing a different document to see if the error persists. If it does this on everything you try to print you should also double check teh rear guide in the paper tray. There is a rear guide in paper tray 2. If it slides back too far it will make the printer think that paper longer than 8 1/2 x 11 is loaded. Push the paper all the way forward in the tray and push the rear guide until it is snug with the tail end of the paper stack.

HP Laserjet 4700 Always Defaults to Tray 1

Your tray 1 might be open (even just partially) or your manual feed setting might be on. You can find this setting under > Configure device / Printing / Manual Feed

Hp laserjet must manually push button to print

Hi,

Please print a configuration page from the control panel of the printer
- Menu > Information menu > print configuration.
- Check for paper handling details.
Following setting should reflect.
Tray 1: Any size / Any Type
Tray 2: A4 size / Plain Type

If the above settings are not reflecting in the configuration page, please change accordingly by browsing on the control panel of the printer to:
Paper Handling Menu >
Tray 1 Size: Any
Tray 1 Type: Any
Tray 2 Size: A4
Tray 2 Type: Plain

Let me know if that helps to solve the issue.

Regards,
Nikhil.

HP Laserjet 5000dn

if you using office go to page setup and select the tray(s) that you want to use for the first page and other pages ( both must be the same ) unless you only want the first page as letter head and the rest on plain paper or something along those lines ?

Also if you go into the properties of the printer and go to advanced and then click on the printing defaults button and see if the options in there are the same or different to whats in printing preferences.

If they are set to tray 1 then it will default to tray 1

Default Tray

Did you set the default tray in the "Printer Properties" in Control Panel? Or, if you did, do you get any paper tray related error messages? It's possible that there is some sensor flag that's malfunctioning. Usually, however, it's just a setting in the printer driver.
