I have sub-zero fridge about 18 years old. It has started this loud humming noise while it is running. it varies how long this noise will go on, sometimes a few minutes other times a half hour. This happens many times, on and off during the day and night. I also have ice built up to approximately 60% of the coils, at the rear. Would appreciate a solution. Thanks.
Sonds like thre is a problem with the defrost because you should not have that much ice on the coils. go ahead and do a manual derfost and make sure that the drain lne is clear and not frozen up. If it is oyu can use a turkey baster with hot water to thaw it until the watr flows easily out the tube in the unit. also how are you gaskets looking? are they starting to leak air into the freezer and the refrigerator/ at 18 years old those are a few of the things to look at. Hopte that htis solves yur problems and if not don't rate this and I can still come back and post answer or solutions for yu. After the final them rate if you would be so kind. Compressors usually make a thrumming/humming noise, so yes, this sounds like the fan. It could be something touching the fan blades, like ice or a wire. If you can unplug the fridge and remove panels near the fan, you may discover the problem.
Hello Welcome to fixya. I'm Huuum and happy to assist you,
You said, your ice maker is making a buzzing or humming noise ice maker isn't making much ice. . fridge is about 2 1/2 years old.
This sounds like a clogged water line or a electrical short ! I would get service rather than take a chance on electrical fire. Or burn up the circuit in the ice maker.

if you have ice buildup then the fridge may be low on freon. or there is dust clogging around the pump or fan is not running. remove the bottom or back and look around the compressor. see that the fan is running.
Sounds like the freezer fan is rubbing some wires or possible some foam insulation around the fan. I would look into the freezer compartment fan and go from there. The fan Will Shut off when you open the doors. Let me know how you make out and if you need anymore help.
if it is coming from under your unit is it most likely the water inlet valve for the icemaker check that and let me know you will have to remve the 2 screw on the kick plate to get to it,it should be on the left side
The motor for the auger drive runs pretty slow (about 18 rpm), it could be the drive is running continuously (unless the door is open). Check that and let me know some more info, is the noise real loud, soft, etc. Can you feel anything vibrating or running when the door switch is pressed in?
My refrigrator is making the same humming noise on an of for as long as an hour or longer no ice build up. Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks!
