Need to find part for DeLonghi Mixer

If you can hear the motor spinning and the beater does not spin, the worm gear has probably failed. These fail frequently, specially after using them beyond there designed limits. The motor heats up and the gear, which is a type of plastic or nylon, melts.

Hi SHIRLAFINK, you do not need to 'oil' the transmission gears on a KA mixer. Your KA mixer comes with enough grease to 'last a lifetime' - whatever that means?

Depending on the age of your mixer and how heavily you use it, there may be a time when you might want to replace the grease, but that period is usually measured in years of useage.

Of course if one of the gears strips or breaks, you will need to replace all the grease when you replace the broken gear. Attempting to use salvaged grease jeopardized the remaining gears if pieces of metal or plastic debris are suspended in the old grease.

HI KEN9486, from the way you describe your mixer’s malaise, the apparent lack of power during the dough mixing process does not appear to be to be a mechanical issue, but electrically induced. You’ve already put your fingers on the culprit – the brushes! Anytime your mixer’s brushes have been worn down as much as you indicated, they should be replaced.
Be sure you have the Parts List manual on hand to order the correct brushes. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM50P (Your K5SS mixer falls within this manual), and select the first file KSM50P.pdf (438.31 KB) listed under Parts List (4) but check to verify this matches your mixer model.
On Pages 6 and 7, you will find the brush & spring assembly (Illus. No. 29) and Part No. 9706416 that you need to order. Replace them both.
Here are five potential online vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com (for grease). Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do some comparison shopping.

Turn to Page 11 and you will find the instructions for adjusting the mixer head height.I have extracted the instructions below:
Beater to Bowl Clearance
Your mixer is adjusted at the factory so that the flat beaterjust clears the bottom of the bowl. If for any reason, the flat beater hits thebottom of the bowl or is too far away from the bowl, clearance

Tilt-Head models
• Unplug mixer.
• Lift motor head.

• Turn screw (A) SLIGHTLY counter clockwise (left) to raise flat beater or clockwise (right) to lower flat beater.
• Make adjustment with flat beater, so it just clears surface of bowl.
If you over adjust the screw, the bowl lock lever may not lock into place.


Bowl-Lift models
• Unplug mixer.
• Place bowl lift handle in down position.

• Turn screw (B) SLIGHTLY counter clockwise (left) to raise flat beater and clockwise (right) to lower flat beater.
•Make adjustments with flat beater, so it just clears surface of bowl.

jack440 - When was the last time you used your mixer? To answer your question, yes, you KA mixer has internal transmission and planetary gears which convert the electric motor's rotation into the mixer's rotation. The internal gears are factory packed with enough grease to last a 'lifetime' (whatever that means). Depending on the age of your mixer, where it was stored (high temp possibly?) and how long it's been idle; these conditions may have let some of less viscous grease seep beyond the gasket, down the agitator shaft into your mixing bowl. What can you do? First clean your bowl and agitator shaft with detergent and hot water. If your mixer is not under warranty you can troubleshoot it yourself. Be sure you have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download it from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number (in your case, try K45SSW select Parts List (1) and then check to see it this matches your mixer model). You can check on page 4 & 5 for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts. It can be messy but gratifyingl. You might want to reorder the gasket for starters. Tegan, sorry to hear you tilt mixer head is drooping and causing rubbing problems with the mixing bowl. This should be pretty easy to fix, if you?ve got a small blade screw driver and a small hex driver (or jewelers screw driver). First, do you still have the K45SS Parts List? If not, you can download a PDF version from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number (in your case, use KSM90P) and select one of the files that appear under Parts List. Turn to page 4 - Case, Gearing and Planetary unit, which shows the exploded view diagram and locate Illus. Nos. 29 & 30. Page 5 lists the parts as Adjusting Screw and Set Screw respectively. What?s probably happened is that over 12 years of operation, the vibrations from your mixer has caused the set screw to loosen and drop, hence the lower mixer head. Both screws will need to be ?adjusted? to move the head back to its original position. Now the problem is removing the head from its pedestal. Turn to page 8 and gently remove Illus. No. 7, Hinge Pin, with a hammer and pin driver. With the hinge pin removed the mixer head and pedestal can be separated and you should have access to adjusting and set screws. I would inspect them for wear and tear, and replace them, if you deem appropriate. It may take a few trial reassemblies to get the mixer head back to the original factory position, but once there, everything should be OK. I hope this helps! Howard, Burke, VA

You have a gear with broken teeth or one sliding out of place because the brass shims are eaten up. Hobarts have what is called a planetary, round head where the grease caps are, and there are no clutches for this planetary. These units are not made to change gears while unit is running (#1 problem of gear failure) (#2 is overloading the bowl) Hobarts need a really stiff GREASE, not oil. If you decide to take the planetary apart, get all the syrup out and replace with a stiff axel grease. It is a very difficult job replacing a gear & ALL the shims. The round head where the grease caps are can easily be removed to do this.

Remove the metalic ring around the mixing head. Push down on it with a flat head screwdriver...
Remove the pin from the mix shaft.
Pull down on the mixer head. Inspect the gears.
If nothing wrong here, disassemble completely and inspect drive gears. Something is broke and needs replaced. You need to find it first, then take that broken part to the dealer to get a new one. Good luck

Remove the back housing by removing one screw and liftingand pulling rearward.
Remove two screws holding the metalic edge trim. This uncovers the seam. Screws are on the back.
Remove four visible screws from the bottom of the head around and near the pillar.
Now gently using a screw driver, push the metallic ring on the mixing head down and off.
This uncovers five more screws about the mixing head. Remove them.
Using a very small screw driver or punch, puch the pin out of the mixing head shaft.
Remove the mixing head housing.
Lift up on the motor housing to remove it.
The motor/gear housing is the top protion of the mixer. Its loaded with grease so do this over a covered countertop or some place easy to clean. The grease won't run, but it can fall out in gobs.
Make sure all sealing surfaces are clean, especially the gasket around the gears. This will insure a good seal. No gear grease in your famous cookies!
Reinstall in reverse.
