Sounds like you've diagnosed the solution on your own.. Most of the inlet valves are spring loaded so that if power is removed or disabled.. it defaults to a closed state and doesn't allow water int the wash basin. To open, they need to be energized by the control system so you may have one of two issues.. a faulty inlet valve that doesn't spring closed when it is not energized or a controller that is comanding that valve to open ( less likely of the two) For a quick test.. make sure the DW is dry inside and open the door. wait and watch for water to enter the basin.. If it does begin to fill up.. your inlet valve could be the root of your problem.. It is also possible that you are back-siphoning waste water in from the drain system. If the water looks dirty then that is more than likely the problem so you may have a clogged pump, kinked drain hose or your drain system itself is not draining as fast as the DW pump forces the water out.
You should routinely clean the pump filter so that the pump can remove all the wash water without having to draw it thru food debris caught in the filter.. Hope someof these ideas will help you solve your problem..

We had same problem machine same age, had a service person in and the found that the motor was dying. LG wouldn't cover saying that it was normal wear and tear. b
