My Mac that I've had for almost a year refuses to take any disks into the drive. I think it may be related to strange sounds coming from the drive everytime I open my Mac. Any suggestions beyond what is on apple.com?
If I am unable to fix this personally, any idea how much it would cost to have the Apple store folks take a look?
Do you usually lean or put any pressure on the area above the slot-load optical drive? If you have anything flat and plastic around 1/4" (about 1/2 the width as a USB plug) stick it in the optical drive until you just feel it going past the door, and rotate 90 degrees so it opens it a little. See attached photos if you aren't sure what I am talking about
regardless, you should definitely take it to the apple store if it is still under warranty
I saw this suggestion to stick something in there. All I could find was a credit card made of flat plastic. I stuck it in the DVD slot, and pointed it upward. I pushed it left to right so that I could feel it push in the switch in there three times. Then I tried putting the CD back in, and it worked! I am ecstatic. I was trying for an hour, with DVDs and CDs. And I couldn't load anything. I don't know if that will work every time, but it sure solved the problem today!

Ive had the same problem for some time, crapbookslow! ive just tried putting the cd in with the laptop (macbookpro) on its side and then upside down, tapped it on the bottom abit before i tried the cd in the drive(while still inverted) and it seems to have worked, turned it back over and it reads the cd,admittedly it seems slow but it works.
CD/DVD drives are one of the first things to go bad in a computer. Laptops are difficult to repair so it probably won't be cheap to fix. You could use an external USB drive but that kind of defeats the purpose of have a laptop doesn't it. I don't play music or watch movies on a computer because it just wears out the drive faster. I only use it for installing software etc.
1. Go into Spotlight from the top of your MacBook on the menue bar. 2. And search for "CDs & DVDs" (It's also in the System Preferences)Click on it and a small CDs & DVDs window will pop up with options of what happens when you insert a disk into the drive3. By then, try inserting a disk in. It should accept it.4. If nothing happens, then manually open the program that should be opening when you insert the disk or go to Finder (Eg. if it's an audio disk, then open iTunes)5. If opening the program still does not activate the drive to start spinning the disk, then close the programs and windows you opened, and repeat step 1-4 and the disk should be spinning and automatically opening the proper app.
I was too scared to try prodding things into the disk drive so I tried this before and it worked for me.
My macbook login screen won't take my password. Even after I used master pasword to change password. I typed new password and verified password in but It shook the screen, not accepting my new password. I have tried different several command prompts to turn it on thinking one of them might override the problem. my macbook won't accept the installation disk to direct me to disk utilities and first aid. Any other suggestions?
For mine it was making sounds if you moved it upside down, I went to check if something had come loose and a quarter came out. So, be aware they are the right size to get stuck in there and cause problems. taking it out solved it immediately
SOURCE: optical disc drive malfunction
The optical drive checks the TOC (Table Of Contents) when you insert a disk. If it can't read it, (for any reason), it will eject the disk. This may be due to a dirty laser, or that the laser has failed.
Try using a laser cleaning disk, (these are available from most high street retailers0. If that does'nt cure the problem you will have to get the drive replaced.

To rjoneill1: What was the resolution to your drive problem? Tried the techniques suggested in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801 and got nowhere. Drive still did not accept disks. Was your drive still under warranty when Apple replaced it? Thanks. -- DL

since apple drives are formatted in HSF+, a file system that windows cannon read, the chances of it even being bossible to run anything on it from a PC is very very slim.

Gaming disc got stuck in drive now slot for disc not grabbing the disc?
My Disk Drive On my 1 year old mac book, wont read any disk i put it dose not show up on the desk top or in finder. it will eject if I drill the eject button.
I Think i dropped it about half a meter to a hard floor but that's is it.
my macbook stopped reading discs about 1 month after the warranty was up.(never dropped it or anything, it rarely leaves my coffee table.) makes a bunch of noise when you load a disc and you can hear the disc spinning but then it ejects it. would like to take it to an apple store but the douche nozzles that work there are about as helpful as ten miles of dog turd on a hot day.
im not sure what your solution helps with exactly? i do that and suddenly the drive should be functional again?
My  mac wont accept any cd  / dvd  in the driveÂ
This exact problem is occurring with my CrapBook. Not only is it taking a CD/DVD and spitting it back out, it will scratch the hell out of anything it takes in. I am passed the warranty and don't know if this garbage is even worth fixing, but if someone finds an easy-fix for this retarded malfunction then I am more than willing to use it. I think I would prefer it if the drive just popped out and I could place my CD in. It is like they made this laptop with a feature that was bound to **** out.Â

I suddenly can't put a CD in my drive. Is this seriously a problem that's expensive to fix? Why does it suddenly go? i've only had my computer for 3 1/2 years. (I have a mac ibook).
