Phone system using Norstar M7208 in an office. Some phones are programmed to get an outside line when you pick them up. Others are programmed to require one to hit "Intercom" and then dial 9. Can we make it uniform by reprogramming some aspect of the system? How?

Thanks. However, that manual does not describe how to reprogram the buttons. I will repost shortly with more detail.

  • mdelay Jun 08, 2008

All the phone functions I have seen programmed have been via buttons. The maintenance people I have sen did not bring any compiler with them to set things up. So I suspect that the programming is not done via a custom software. I will repost shortly with more detail.

  • mdelay Jun 08, 2008

There is an elementary Users Guide, that one can find online, but I have not found a programming manual. I will repost with more detail.

  • mdelay Jun 08, 2008

Here is a bit more detail. I apologize for not providing this earlier.

We have a phone system based on the Norstar M7208. First one phone maintenance person visited to set up some phones, which I call Group A. Then another person visited and set up another set of phones, that I call Group B. Both sets of phones are part of the same system in one small office. The problem is that the two Groups behave differently, as follows:
    (1) On a Group A phone, one picks up the handset and an outside line dial tone is heard. On Group B, one has to push a button labeled Intercom and then press 9 to get an outside line.
    (2) On an incoming call, Group A phones can pick up the call, just by picking up the handset. On Group B, one has to press Intercom and then dial the extension number of the main (receptionist) phone to pick up the call.

We would like all the phones to behave as do Group A.

Understood for sure, but the maintenance company cannot be found, probably discorporated....

Best get the maintenance people to set up the system uniformly.
Firstly, they know exactly whats to be done, secondly, should any issue arise in future, you're not to blame :)

Here is your manual

http://techsupport.svots.edu/telephone/m7208.pdf

If you press the Line 1 button before dialing, they should all work the same I believe, if not let me know, otherwise you should be able to use the feature button to program it as you want

At my office when we have more then 2 calls come through on an extension line, the 3rd caller gets auto directed to general mailbox...can i change this? would like private calls to stay at correct number...

Check Forward Busy under Capabilities in programming, any phone that has lines ringing this setting should be set to NONE.
Also make sure line 3 is assigned to ring at those phones.

If unsure of programming the phone system or password call your local tech to come in.

Norstar M7208, it's direct line number is diverting to another ph

It could be a simple as the phone has call forwarding to another extension set up on it or the direct line could also be programmed on the other set. Does the screen on the non- ringing m7208 display "forward to:xxx" or does it display the current day and time?

How do you set up caller ID on a Norstar M7208 phone with 4 lines?

There are a few other things you need before it will just work on your phones. You need to get Caller-Id activated by your carrier on each of the 4 lines. You also need to make sure your system has a Trunk card capable of Caller-Id. The card in your systems should be labeled CID.

After this you still need to program the lines for Caller-Id in the configuration section of programming.

Won't generate tones from keys when connected

Any other phones on system with the problem?

DTMF or touch tones are generated through the trunk card(s) of the sytem problem. Chances are there may be more then one phone that has a problem.

Also on the outside of things, just try calling the same number from a different phone on the system, and if possible try using the trunk/line that you did with the m7208 in question, same problem? If yes possible trunk issue. If no, then try another phone where the problem set is plugged into.
Another thing you can try is call another service that uses a touch tone menu, using the phone in question, see if you have the same problem.

Plugging it in

Your Nortel M7208 phone is plugged into your Norstar phone system (not the phone line) You would not be able to use DSL on the same phone port used by the M7208 phone. A filter connected to that port would not solve a DSL issue and could only cause problems with the M7208 phone. You may need to put the filter on the phone lines before they connect to the Nortel phone system... I don't know which system you have or how it is wired up so I am not sure how easy that would be for you.

Programming a phone to pick up calls

I need more information. When calls come in, does the triangles appear on the phones you want to pick up? Do you have all the lines on the phones? Is sounds like you want only the "ringing sound" to happen on your phone, but have it appear on the others. Is this correct??
