My Samsung fride started making a noise that would peter out when the door was opened. I finally realised that ice build up behind the inside panel was impeding the fan. Once I defrosted the ice by removing the panel and switching off the appliance, the fridge returned to its normal function, only to have the problem crop up again a week later.
I have since manually defrosted the fridge twice, only to have the problem recur after a week.
Does this mean the Auto-defrost function is somehow disabled. How can I resolve this problem ?

The rubbing noise comes from your build up of ice. If no auto-de-icer, then unplug your fridge or turn it off, allow it to thaw, remove all dripping water. restart or replug
I use a shop vac to remove water.
be sure NOT to break, or chip the ice, as you may break freezer components

If noise stops when you open the door, you may have a noisy fan (or could have ice build up, causing fan blade to hit ice and cause noise). I gather it is a frost-free model ie has a fan in the freezer compartment. If noise is caused by fan hitting ice build up, you may have a problem with the auto defrost system, as you should not get ice build up in a frost free.
Noise stops when you open door because fan turns off when door is opened.
The light is switched on and off by a small lever which is pushed when closing or opening the door. This operates a microswitch. It would not make any grinding noise. Grinding noise can come from the fanmotor which would also stop when the fridge door is open.
The problem is a buildup of ice on the plastic housing (the curved plastic bit) in the back of the freezer under the fixed shelf where the icetub goes. The fan behind this plastic housing is hitting the ice when the defrost comes on.
Unplug the fridge, unpack the freezer, remove the four screws in the back, take off the sheetmetal backing and let the fridge thaw. You can remove the plastic piece after a while and get the ice off (be careful not to remove the styrofoam insulation by going too quickly).
Reassemble and you're back in business, for a few months. I'm never buying Samsung again myself.
its a heater cycle problem..the defroster is not working properly. its building up ice in the evaporator that touches the evaporator fan that makes that loud noise but stops when you open a door. it could be either a bad heater, a bad thermo disc or a bad timer.hope i was able to help
Sounds like the circ. fan may be hitting something or has a blade broken off. The refer gets cool air from the freezer section to cool it so the fan aids in the circulation along with vents/dampers, etc. to move air into the refer compartment. If that fan is broken off the motor shaft or something then the motor can run but no air will move. See if you can feel air moving out of the vents, it will be a little bit of "blowing" not a huge wind. A wet hand can help feel for wind. I believe the deodor light may indicate a change is needed (but check the owners manual for actual meaning).
If there is no air flow open the freezer section and see if the air flow is noticed then... if a air channel if frozen and can't draw air from the proper area, opening the freezer door will give it outside air and you may feel flow then, that would tell you of a frozen air channel issue.
