SOURCE: What does code F70 and F71 mean on my whirlpool duet?

Error code F70 means no communication is detected from the Central Control Unit (CCU) to the User Interface while F71 is the reverse; no communication detected from the User Interface to the Central Control Unit (CCU). This could simply mean a loose or poor connection between the two communicating boards.

Disconnect power to the washer prior to servicing to avoid the risk of electric shock.

Remove the three screws attaching the top panel to the rear of the washer then slide the panel rearward and lift it off the washer.

Disconnect the User Interface ribbon connector from the left side of the Central Control Unit (CCU) and clean the connector and terminals thoroughly. Reseat the connector several times to ensure a good connection between the Central Control Unit (CCU) and the User Interface.

It is highly recommended to clean and reseat every wiring harness connector from the Central Control Unit (CCU) to prevent the same problem in the near future.

Reconnect every wiring harness to the CCU and make sure all connectors are firmly seated. Slide the top panel back into position and secure it to the rear of the washer with the screws previously removed.

Let us know if the problem persists for further assistance. We will be happy to resolve your problem.

SOURCE: flashing code F71 then F70

We've owned a Whirlpool Duet Washer (WFW9200SQ00) for about 3 years. We started getting the F70 error code intermittently about 6 months ago and it seems to progressively be getting worse. Unplugging the unit for a few minutes resets the error, but it comes back about every 2nd or 3rd load causing my wife a lot of frustration and with 4 kids, our laundry was backing up. After reading several Forum's, I found the F70 error code indicates a "heartbeat" communication error between the various electronic boards inside the washer and the consensus seems to be the most likely culprit is the Motor Control Unit (MCU) board. Before spending nearly $250 for a replacement board (http://www.helpfulparts.com/servlet/the-5733/8183196/Detail) with no guarantee that it would fix the problem, I decided to take the board out of the machine and inspect it. What I found is the connector for the communication (the connector with three blue wires) on this board is a very unreliable connector that uses the edge of the printed circuit board on one side of the connection instead of a real connector soldered to the board. In addition, the fit of this connector seems to loose to make a good connection. I noticed a little bit of corrosion on the board contacts which I cleaned with rubbing alcohol and a pencil eraser. After re-installing the cleaned board we've done several loads with (keeping my fingers crossed) no errors. I am still concerned about the reliability of this connection. Because of it's location, this board is subject to a fair amount of vibration and because of the loose fit I'm concerned that this issue will only come back over time. I've already decided that if the error comes back I will solder wires to the contacts on the board to provide a more robust connection. It's a shame that you can spend well over $1,000 on a top of the line washer, and in order to save $.10 Whirlpool decided to use a very poor connector in a critical area. It makes you wonder where else did they skimp to save a few pennies?!! Our next washer will not be a Whirlpool, and next time will not get a high end washer with all the bells and whistles.

SOURCE: kenmore elite 3t washer with code f71

The F70 and F71 error codes on this model of washer indicates a communication problem between the user interface control board and the central control unit (main control board). These error codes can sometimes be caused by a power surge or glitch through the electrical lines. Try unplugging the washer to completely disconnect electrical power. Wait 1 minute and then plug the washer back in to the see if the fault code clears. If it does, then the washer may work normally.

If the code reappears, then you could have a wire harness connection problem, a failed user interface control board or a failed central control unit. I recommend calling a service technician to properly diagnose and repair this type of problem so that the correct component can be replaced.

Be sure your unit is plugged into a 3 prong grounded outlet as well.

F71 is a "heatbeat failure" which means that your front interface control board is shorted and will need to be replaced. it's actually fairly easy to replace and can definitely be done by yourself. To access the part, just pull the unit forward and remove the 3 screws coming in from the back of the top panel. Remove the top panel by pulling it back, up, and off. Then remove all the screws going into the top of the control panel. Remove the dispenser drawer and remove the screws coming in through the dispenser. Remove the screws coming from the inside of the dryer going forward into the control panel, then remove the control panel (it's just clipped in on the bottom. After that you can disconnect the wire harnesses to the front interface control board and replace that part.

SOURCE: no communication between UI and CCU

Hi.

I think that by this time you already fixed the problem. The codes indicate usually a fault that is either CCU or MCU.

I have a Kenmore model 11049962603 that displayed an f-71 error code. I ordered a new cpu computer from sears and installed it. the machine seemed to work for one or two loads. now it displays an f-70...

I provided a complete list of error codes for this type of washer in the image below. The error codes vary by the exact model of HE3t washer that you have. Since you have an HE3t that is displaying the F70 and F71 codes, the list below should apply to your model. These are not listed in the owner's manual because they are intended for technicians. Use extreme caution if you follow any of the troubleshooting described in this information sheet. Unplug the washer and shut off the water supply before accessing internal components.

The F70 and F71 codes indicate that you have a communication error between the CCU (Central Control Unit or main machine control board) and the user interface touch pad assembly. Here are some troubleshooting tips:

Make sure that you have the washer plugged into a properly grounded 3 prong 120 volt AC electrical outlet.

Unplug the washer for 30 seconds to allow the control boards to power down and reset. Plug the washer back in but do not touch the power button (or any other buttons) for 1 full minute. This may reset the control board. Pressing the power button too quickly after reapplying electrical power to the washer can cause the F70 or F71 code since the CCU does not have time to recognize the user interface control.

If the above tip does not help then the most suspect component failure is the MCU (motor control unit -- motor control board at the bottom of the washer beside the drive motor). You can check for this failure by unplugging the washer and then pulling the MI3 connection on the CCU. The wiring diagram below has the MI3 connection highlighted in red. The connection has blue wires. The third image below shows this connection on the control board. The connections are labeled on the control board. Press the tab at the bottom of this plug down and then pull it out. Power up the machine with this connection unplugged and don't touch any buttons for 1 minute. If you then press the power button to turn on the washer and don't get the F70 or F71 code then the MCU at the bottom of the washer will likely need to be replaced to fix this problem. A technician would normally be needed to verify this failure and replace the MCU. The MCU is expensive ($423).

This troubleshooting information is based on a common HE3t model that displays the F70 and F71 codes. If you need more help, submit additional details and the full model number of your HE3t washer.
