You'll need (it sounds like) to manually install the driver for Windows 7 for your sound card. This link will take you to the C-Media download page for the driver.
Uninstall the driver using the device manager, reboot. If Windows does not automatically reinstall the correct driver, reinstall the driver you downloaded.
Are you using a PCI sound card rather than the onboard sound? The onboard is listed as "ADI AD1888; 5.1 channel audio" & IMO, it's much better than "C-Media CMI8738/C3DX Audio".
