How to tell if the compressor on your ac unit is running

If you have a split unit, it is fairly simple, just feel the small refrigerant line coming out of the unit. The temperature should be warmer than the surrounding air. If is not running the temperature will be the same as the surrounding air. If you have a package unit, take off the access cover to where the compressor is located. Find the compressor discharge piping to the the condensing coil. It is the smaller of the two major pipes on the side of the compressor. Be careful the temperature of line coming out of a properly operating compressor will be hot enough to cause second degree burns. If the line is very warm to very hot the compressor is running. If you have a set of gauges, attach the RED hose to the high pressure service connection and the other low pressure hose BLUE to the bigger pipe low pressure connection. Make sure the gauges are isolated by shutting the valves. The pressure difference between high and low pressure is normally at least 150 psig diference.

Location of ac high pressure cutout switch on a 97 Plymouth voyager. Could it be a different problem? Had to replaced the PCM and a couple sensors because of a short in the wiring cluster. Now the ac...

HIGH PRESSURE CUTOFF SWITCH LOCATED ON AC COMPRESSOR DISCHARGE LINE LEADING TO THE CONDENSOR.THE HIGH PRESSURE CUTOFF SWITCH WILL CUT OFF THE AC COMPRESSOR IF SYSTEM PRESSURE RISES TO HIGH CAUSED BY RESTRICTION IN THE REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT OR OVERHEATED CONDENSOR.MAKE SURE COOLING FAN IS RUNNING WHEN THE AC SWITCH IS ON.THE COOLING FAN KEEP CONDENSOR COOL, IF COOLING FAN DONT RUN.YOUR AC WILL STOP BLOWING COLD AIR.HAVE THE REFRIGERANT SYSTEM CHECK OUT.MAKE SURE YOUR LOW SIDE PRESSURE IS 10 - 37 PSI. THE HIGH SIDE PRESSURE SHOULD BE 112 - 210 PSI. CHECK THE AC COMPRESSOR CLUTCH FUSE AND RELAY.

The unit will not cool below 78 degrees. How do I check the freon level?

Without refrigeration gauges, you can't check your freon level. You have to check the pressure of the freon, not the level. If you are careful and have a basic knowledge of electricity and moving parts, you can get an idea if you are out of freon. If you remove the lower slotted cover from the refrigerator you will see the condensor coils. This is a radiator that has aluminum fins on the front and will have a fan running behind it. If the compressor is running this condenser coil should be hot to the touch at the top part of the aluminum fins. If the fins are covered with dust and dirt it can cause your cooler to malfunction. Also if the fan is not running the compressor will overheat and quit. If you pull the cooler away from the wall, you can see the compressor in the bottom of the cooler. There are two copper lines leading to the compressor. The small line goes to the condensor coils (the radiator) and should be hot enough to burn your finger if you have enough freon. Also the larger of the two copper lines brings the freon back to the compressor from inside the cooler. It should be cold to the touch if you have proper freon pressure. If both of those two lines feel about the same temperature, either the compressor is not running or you have no freon. BE CAREFUL! There are electrical lines and moving fan blades near the compressor, and some of the tubing gets really hot.

Air not cold enough to cool house

Make sure the outside fan is running. Also check the high side pressure, I assume the 70# is the low side pressure, so you can tell what the compressor is doing. If the fan and compressor are both working, make sure there is good airflow through outdoor coil and check that it is clean. Let me know what you find.

Compressor working, cooling coils hot, but unit won't cool below

When you say fully charged, did you weigh the refrigerant? These small systems cannot tolerate overcharging by even small amounts because it will result in overpressure on the suction side. If there's too much refrigerant you get hot coils and cool but not cold evaporator. I typically pump the refrigerant into a recovery tank and then weigh it back in to get exactly the amount on the mfg label.

Beverage air cycling off/on

These units are not designed to run in temps much lower than 50 degrees. They have no winter controls and the freon pressures will take a nose dive when running in a cold ambient condition. The unit will not run well in a cold environment, compressor damage may result. :(
