I have the same problem, however i have searched through and tried all the suggested solutions here and on other websites and none of them work, it just stays stuck in the startup screen, with the red hard drive led and power lights on, when i conect it to my computer the same happens and also the charging led does not come on.
Please if anyone has any other ways to fix this problem let me know.

The solutions do not work if you can't get out of the recovery screen. When I try the repair, the screen switches to the Archos logo, then a brief flash of a checking partition, and then straight back into the recovery screen. The reset button doesn't work and the pc does not recognise the archos at all. That means that there is no option to load up any firmware update. Is there any solution short of dropping the stupid thing (and all my music and photos) into the bin? Same problem. I'm just having the Archos logo, sometimes scrambled. Reseting the device does not solve the problem. Pressing Power and TV/LCD does not make the device entering in recovery mode. Anything else I could do ? Thanks

Solution found!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you so much for the support of the Archos team. here is what i did to repair my 504 if your "reset" button doesn't help at all, this is what you'll do.
If you power on the unit by pressing and holding the TV/LCD button and power button simultaneously the unit will boot into a recovery screen. Once in this screen choose "Repair Disk" and follow the on screen instructions.
When prompted, please place the following file into the 'root directory' of the unit:
before i found this solution, i've already given up on my 504, but now it's back!!!! REBIRTH!!! thanks once again to Tony H from Archos Technical Support
hold the tv button slightly earlier than holding the power button, first tv then power (while still pressing the tv button). it should first boot up to a normal green ARCHOS screen, then it will enter the recovery mode.

Your archos probably has a glitch in it. You might have to do a system recovery of it. First download the latest firmware program from Archos website. Here is a quick possible fix when the screen comes up reset the archos by inserting a paperclip in the reset hole located at the bottom of the unit right of the connectors it might work it might not. if that doesn't fix the problem do a hard reset when the logo screen comes up hold down the volume+ button until the white recovery page comes up. First try repairing the unit if that doesn't work try format and follow the instructions. the touch screen doesn't function during the recovery page so use the volume+&- buttons & power button. When you get done your archos should be set to factory presets so you have to set it up. Good Luck
im having the same problem, people say reset it and put it into recovery mode (it tells you in the quick start guide) or that didnt work for me so im trying charging it up fully. also mine makes a noise while trying to turn on, are you having this problem to?
If you chose any of these options already your Os is gone..
try this solution
I fixed my son's 605 4 GB had Recovery code
(104) on it. This might work for other error codes too. These are the steps i
followed * Use thecomputerfor this
process that you always used for this archos Archos should be plugged in to Pc
before starting the process. * Download the firware Upgrade 2.1 * Plug the Archos toPc * When the white option screen comes up pick the
format disk * Wait until all done do not pick any option on
archos after format is done Pc should recognize your archos in 5 seconds * Put the firmware in root section of the archos not in any folder. * Safely remove the usb for Archos from your pc
first and then unplug thecable. * Do not pick any option on the Archos screen * Just turn it off from the power button by
holding it until it turns off * Wait about 5 minutes and plug it back to pc * it will come up with white screen again but this
time it will start Update you will see the progress bar moving, wait until it
is all done, it will shut off. Turn it back on and your archos will be back to normal

If you enter recovery mode then connect to a computer, you can then use windows drive checker to verify the drive. If all is OK, copy firmware to the root then disconnect and reboot

Reseting the device does not solve the problem.
Pressing Power and TV/LCD does not make the device entering in recovery mode.
Anything else I could do ?
Thanks
