Water damage dropped in plain bath water, was quickly retrieved, flash was going on and off when battery was taken out, it's completely dried out now, when turned on has a black screen but is back lit and key pad lights up. any suggestions?

Open the phone and remove the battery. Dab all internal surfaces with paper towel to remove as much moister as possible. Then use a hair dryer on medium heat to gently dry the phone completely. Make sure the battery is dry as well. Leave the phone open for a further half hour after drying and then put the battery back in and close the case. Switch on the phone, good luck.

if it is fresh water it has a very good chance of working again

Accidents happen with phones and water but it doesn't always mean that all hope is lost. Below is a brief guide as to what you should do if your phone has been totally immersed in water.

1. Take the phone out of the water as quickly as possible.

2. Do not attempt to switch it on as this may cause further damage.

3. Remove the battery as quickly as you can, also remove the memory and sim cards.

4. If dropped in fresh water dry it off with a towel. If dropped in salt water rinse it thoroughly with fresh water. I know it sounds crazy getting it wet again but salt can cause a lot of internal damage such as corrosion. Again dry with a towel. You may also want to rinse it if you dropped it in a toilet.

5. Place the phone, battery and it's wet accessories in a plastic container (like a lunch box) and completely cover it with uncooked rice, use plenty of it. Again this sounds crazy but rice has desiccating properties that help draw the water out of the phone. Do not place a lid on the container.

6. Place the container somewhere very warm and dry for at least 3 days. An airing cupboard is often the ideal place.

7. Do not use a hair dryer directly on the phone to speed up the process. Too much heat can cause even more damage.

This isn't guaranteed to work but many people have successfully revived their phones and retrieved their data using this method.

Keep in mind that your phone is on borrowed time after you do this. Make it your first priority to retrieve any data that you would like to keep. It may only work for a few minutes, days, weeks, months or it may even last years.

You should monitor the phone carefully during charging. If it gets very hot the battery may be damaged and should be replaced.

After any exposure to water you no longer have a warranty as water damage is not covered. Any insurance policies on the phone may also be voided unless you are covered for accidental damage.

A more efficient alternative to rice is silica gel. You most likely won't have enough of the stuff to hand when the accident happens but it is good to use. Silica gel can be bought from electronic wholesalers like this example. Thank you to shuntfield for this information.

Let it dry out for another day or two too make sure it's completely dry inside. Or you can you a hair dryers to blow out and dry the excess water inside.

In case none of this will work, it needs repair.

the water usually shorts out the little lcd screen. i have heard that when u drop a phone into water it discharges all battery power into the phone. in effect shocking the screen, speakers, keypad etc. best thing to do when this happens is to check if your warrenty is expired and try to get a new one. if u dont have a warrenty, open the phone completely and let all guts dry. i am now a cell expert, i dont advise anyone to open a cell phone, becauce it could result in personal injury or damage to phone. only try this if u are skilled with small devices. attempt at your own risk.

I am sorry to hear about your MP3 player. Sadly, water and electronics do not get along. If the unit was submerged there is bound to be some damage. Still, there are some things you can do to minimize the damage,

First, make sure the unit is powered off and do not attempt to power it back on until you are sure it is completely dry both inside and out. If the battery pack is removeable take it out. Water will short out and damage components that have power applied to them.

Secondly, dry the unit thoroughly both inside and out. You can wipe water off the outside using a dry towel. For the inside, you can try using a handheld hair dryer. However, heat can also damage the unit so make sure you use a dryer with a "cool air" setting. Blow air into the unit through the headphone jack, USB port, etc.

Give the MP3 player plenty of time to dry out. Wait until you are sure it is completely dry. And then wait a few hours longer. Afterwards, you can try reinstalling the battery (if needed) and powering the unit up.

Even if you managed to get the power disconnected and everything dried out as quickly as possible, the sad fact is that the MP3 player may still have sustained major damage. Some electrical components are made of carbon paper and can absorb moisture. So, even if there wasn't an electrical short some of the electronics inside may not work.

It's possible that a unit with water damage may be repairable. You will want to contact he manufacturer about that repair if needed. Unfortunately water damage would probably not be covered by any warranty the unit might have, so you will probably have to pay for the repairs. Depending on the extent of the damage it may make better economic sense just to replace the unit with a new one.

A basic equation is : Water + Phone = Dead Phone Warm water and a phone is really bad news, the level of corrosion inside the phone after a warm bath is significant. You could try to disassemble the phone and clean it on the inside, but you should not get your hopes up. In many cases, repairing the phone (after water damage) is much more expensive than getting a brand new one.
