Called a Dolphin torch, I remember these from the '80s and had to replace the batteries too often to ever want to do it again.
The front unlocks by rotating 1/4 turn. The batteries are a 6V sealed lead acid cell and now cost more than a new modern torch with a Li-ion cell. You will need a 6V charger if the battery can be recharged and unlikely if its old and discharged for long time.

That depends on the species. There are nearly forty species of dolphins, ranging from about 1.2 m and 40 kg to 9.5 m and 10 tonnes. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolphin.

Yes there is a cap. I had the same problem most likely the battery inside has corroded and leaked fusing the cap shut, contact MagLite at www.maglite.com if there were either Duracell, Eveready or Ray-O-Vac batteries in there they will replace it for free under warranty.
