I don't know that much about computers, and I have been told three different things, and I need help!
I have a Presario, which is supposed to be able to hold 2gb of memory. It came installed with 512mb of memory, I purchased two 1gb sticks, Kingston brand, pc2-5300, 667mhz to go into it, because Best Buy told me thats what I needed for this pc. When I left the 512mb in the first slot, and inserted a 1gb into the second slot, it told me (under SYSTEM) I had 1.50gb ram. I took out the 512mb, and inserted another 1 gb, and it then told me i had 1.00gb ram when there was actually 2 in there. I switched the sticks with each other, tried that, and also tried each stick individually in both slots and both slots work, and both sticks work. Im not sure if this means anything, but one of the sticks has those little black square things on only one side, and the other stick has them on both sides. They only insert into the pc one way, so I know I have them in correctly, and I know that both slots as well as both sticks work fine. But it always tells me i only have 1 gb ram. I checked the BIOS screen, and it says:
Memory Bank 1-1024mb
Memory Bank 2-Not Installed
I have been told by HP that it was first an BIOS update I needed-I did that, it didnt work
Then, it was a compatibility issue, they weren't compatible with the computer-but I puchased the correct sticks
Lastly, they told me that it wasn't a compatibiltiy issue, because if it were, the computer wouldn't boot at all, they then told me I needed to flash my BIOS
This costs money that I don't have, especially if its not the problem either.
I have only had my computer a little over a year, and I bought it at Best Buy, and already have had to replace the disk drive in it, it was faulty after I only had the computer for 3 months.
Sorry this is so long, I am trying to be specific.
Please help me!

To Be pricise ...there is no hardware problem.
The problem can be two.
1.Your computer supports max of 1.5 GB RAM.....For this check with other vendors too.
2.You have to update your BIOS.
If you can provide me the motherboard no and details i can clarify more on it
I had the same issue and I found that you need the same amount of memery in each slot. If I put a 512 in each slot they are both recognized. A 1 gig and a 512 then only the 1 gig is recognized. So I put a 1 gig ineach slot and bith are recognized.

Well in a weird situation like the one you have, i suggest inserting one of them into the Memory Bank 2 slot. After that, start up your Computer and shut it down. If it says you have 1GB then that's good. After that, put the other one in the free slot and start it up. I hope i helped, i can't think of what else would work for that.
Worst Comes to worst, just get the one that seems weird replaced with a new one from Best Buy. They should do it free of charge.
