SOURCE: Line on Scanned Documents

There is a spot on the thin strip of glass that sits next to the large scanner glass. Because you are moving the paper when using the feeder, a spot appears as a line. Shining a flashlight on the glass can help you locate it. You can scrape it off with a finger nail or clean it with a damp cloth.

SOURCE: HP Scan Jet 3200C scanning problem

I would say the most likely cause of the issue is either that the scanner is no longer functioning or that it is experiencing power issues. Make sure that the scanner is plugged in directly to the wall and not into a surge protector or a power strip. The scanner does not share power well and pulls it in large amounts - when it can't get it it throws little power fits and sometimes will not turn on at all. Try another wall outlet and see if you can get it to power on and do a scan without the yellow strip showing up.

SOURCE: ADF

1- reinstall drivers

2- Use the WIA driver for Windows OpSys

3- Pay close attention to options in dialog box. Select ADF or Document Feeder as an option

4- Depending on the OCR application [personally I prefer PaperPort] the imaging process can be very eaasy or somewhat difficult

Samsung CLX-6220-FX vertical lines when scanning and copying

The reason for such lines if they appear only on scans/copies from the automatic document feeder (adf), but not on regular scans and printouts is that there is dirt on the small glass stripe next to the scanner area that is used for scanning from the adf. Just clean that glass stripe and the lines should go away.

Scanner leaving black streaks

There are two possible fixes.

Problem Vertical lines; Auto document feeder scan anomaly; ADF scanning problem; Scan issue; Scanner issue; Visible line; Streaks show on page; solid line down the page; Top to bottom line; Smudge runs down the page; Opaque line; Broken line; Bar all the way down the page Solution Overview

This article provides the self-diagnostic steps necessary to evaluate top-to-bottom streaks that appear when copying or scanning.

Important! This is seldom a scanner hardware failure.

The main reason for this anomaly is debris or marks on the scanner glass that is used for Auto document feeder (ADF) page scans.

Printed or Scanned Page Illustration

copyvertstreaks.jpg

Who should consider this article?

Any user of an MFP or All-In-One printer experiencing the following symptoms:

  • -Vertical lines only when using the Autodocument Feeder (ADF).
  • -Observed with any type of scan job (e-mail, ftp, solutions, fax).
  • -However, normal expected output when the page is scanned from the scanner flatbed.

ADF scan behavior

Think of it this way:

  • -The page is pulled from the ADF.
  • -The moving page slides across an ADF-designated portion of glass.
  • -The image sensor, which is located under the glass, reads and interprets the moving page's contents.
  • -Contamination on this ADF glass is seen by the image sensor for the entire length of the page.
  • -The image processor interprets the image sensor's repeated capture of this contamination as a vertical solid line.
  • -Any ADF scan function now exhibits a vertical line.

Suggested Diagnosis and Fix

Step Action 1 Locate the portion of the glass designated for ADF scans.
HINT: The glass location differs by model. This area is often separate from the scanner flatbed. Please reference User's Guide for more information if you are having a difficult time locating this designated area.
2 Perform a visual inspection for any of the following recurring culprits:

  • -Clear adhesive tape
  • -Glue
  • -Ink pen
  • -Paper
  • -Marker
  • -White out
  • -Staples
  • -Environmental dust or dirt
HINT: Ink marks can be especially hard to see and almost translucent at first sight. However, the image sensor (CCD) registers them as a mark. 3 Use a clean, soft, moistened cloth to thoroughly clean and remove any marks or debris. 4 Inspect the underbelly or underside of the ADF for any marks or debris. 5 Perform another scan to see if cleaning the glass alleviated the issue. 6 Repeat the procedure if a vertical line still appears.
Remember! Printing and scanning from the scanner flatbed work fine.
7 This time, place an intentional mark on a blank sheet of paper and take note of its location. Now place that sheet of paper in the ADF and make a copy.
8 Evaluate the distance of the vertical line to the your mark. 9 Inspect that area of the glass for further debris or marks and clean as necessary.

My feeder to scan puts a line down the entire document - the line doesn't appear when I scan from the deck of the printer. I've attempted to clean the rollers but the line still appears on my document?

You don't say what kind of printer you have.
So, I will generalize my answer.
The reason for the line using the ADF and no line with the flatbed is that the paper is moving when using the ADF. So, a piece of dirt, dust or whatever on the ADF glass will cause a line because the paper is moving over a mark on the glass. The copy made on the flat bed glass doesn't move, so no line.
Anyways, clean the thin piece of glass that should be to the left of the big flat bed glass. That will fix your problem

Why do I have a black line down the side of my scanned documents?

If you are using the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) there is likely debris in that section of the scanning glass. The ADF parks the scanner in place and moves the paper over it, if something is on the scanner it will show up as a line. Check the thin section of glass at whichever end of the scanning deck for dust and clean it with a dry towel. If this is happening with documents on the scanner bed the debris is likely in the scanner and will likely need professional servicing.

Very crisp vertical grey line appears (glass clean)

I have the exact same problem. It was there since I first bought the MFC-7840W.
Vertical line appears in scans using the automatic document feeder (ADF).
Vertical line does not appear when scanning single page (placing it directly on the glass -- i.e. not using the ADF).

Cleaning the glass strip for the ADF (or the white pressure bar overhead) does not solve the problem.
The problem does not occur with copies using the ADF (using the COPY button which is basically a scan and print). This would suggest that dust and dirt is not to blame because that would also appear on the copies.
But since I believe a copy is basically a scan plus print, they should be using the same electronics -- a hardware problem on the scan would likely appear on a copy also -- there is some difference between how they accomplish this.
It's definitely not a software issue since it occurs on all versions of Windows and Mac OS X (and multiple computers). It also does not matter whether I "push" the scan to the computer by using the scan button on the MFC... or "pull" the scan from the MFC using the Brother Control Center software.

Red/yellow line down left side of document when using feeder

the solution to this issue is cleaning the scanner glass below the automatic document feeder(mind you its not the scan bed that you normally use while copying) .you will get the ADF scnner glass once you lift the ADF door, you will see a 1 inch wide scanner glass.that is what you need to clean.

Dell 1815 dn printer scanner issue: single line appears in scans

Do you get the same line when you use the adf for other purposes?

If so, check the scanner glass just before the platen for something like white-out on it. Clean both the scanner glass and platen glass with Windex.

That is a common problem on all ADF scanners.

Good Luck

Scanner Imaging problem

Your scanner’s lock switch may be locking up the carriage unit. Depending on the model you own, your scanner’s lock switch resides in one of two locations. You can find it beneath the scanner itself or in a corner next to the scanner bed after you lift the lid. The switch should be marked with a locked and unlocked padlock symbol; slide the switch to the unlocked padlock to unlock the carriage unit.
It’s also possible that the supplied USB cable is improperly connected to your computer. Connect the cable directly to your PC. Canon’s online documentation indicates that scanners that connect via a USB hub may not work properly. Once you have unlocked your scanner and properly connected it directly to your computer, try to rescan the image.
