How do you release the bottom of the canister to empty it?

The first place the "dirty" air enters is the top chamber of the canister where it traps the bigger stuff.

The canister has two clean-out doors so make sure you open them both (top and bottom) or you could have problems.

Nice thing about the Shark as it has a number of clean-out points starting at the base of the hose where it enters the bottom of the vac. to the beater brush (on the bottom of just behind the brush assembly). Good luck!

Hello, the canister empty function works by pulling a long plastic rod that moves the catch on the bottom access door. It sounds like either the puller is stuck or that the rod may be broken. If the puller does move upward when pulled, then the later in most likely. You can check by removing the Torque screws and pulling the top section off very gently, because the canister really needs to be opened and removed first, do this outside to avoid a dirt spill in the house, either way I would look for a used canister from another machine, which is really a much cheaper and less dirty option.

I am sorry to hear your canister is not fitting properly. You may want to separate your cyclone assembly (the top purple portion of your canister) from the clear bin and reattach the components to ensure they are fitted together properly.

To do this, open the bottom of the clear bin, as if you were emptying it. Please be sure the bin is positioned over a trash receptacle in the event there is debris in the bin. Once the bottom of the bin is open please look at the back of your canister. Below the purple top of the canister and to the left of the debris inlet is a clear plastic loop that you can slip your index finger through. Just above this loop is a gray release catch . Using your thumb, press down on the gray release mechanism. At this point you should be able to gently pull the clear bin away from the cyclone assembly. After separating the pieces, briefly inspect them to confirm they are not damaged. If there is no obvious damage, close the base of the clear bin and place the bin on a hard flat surface. Next, carefully lower the cyclone assembly onto the clear bin. It may be helpful to use the red plastic piece on the back of your cyclone assembly and clear bin to line the pieces up correctly. You will hear a slight click once the pieces have been successfully reattached.

Remove the cannister from the vacuum. The bottom lid should release if you depress the red button at the top of the cannister, if this does not release the bottom lid, you will have to depress the red button while pulling the lid open. Either the release mechanism need repair or there is something jamming the bottom lid.

Beofre you go to the extent of buying a replacement canister, you can remove the top and using a straightened coat hanger type thing open that bottom lid. Then maybe you can clean the rim and possibly add some silicone spry to loosen things up. Here's how to get inside In this order: 1) Remove the canister 2) remove the three star screws at the top of the canister. It'll take a bit of pressure to pull the top up, there's a rubber seal. When you pull it up there will be a rod running down into the canister, leave it be, just pull up the top high enough to clear out any debris. 3) Use a straightened coat hanger and with a flashlight to guide you, reach down with it and push it into that hole down at the bottom center of the canister. That will pop the lid open. Clean the canister & lid rims, maybe add some silicone. At this point you might as well clean the canister too. OPTIONAL-> ***leave the bottom lid open*** and follow the rest of these steps 4) Put the top back on aligning the screws, when you lower it make sure the bottom of the rod engages with the hole at the bottom center of the canister, this is why you left the bottom lid open. Put the three star screws back in. 4) Turn the canister upside down, lid open, and keeping in mind this is thin plastic, gently tug upwards on the four fins that surround the bottom rubber seal. This part is held in by friction, so work your way around the four fins gently pulling until you work the ring they're connected to free. This will give you access to the inside of the canister. 5) remove the round perforated section by tugging upwards on it, set it aside with the fin part. 6) Take the canister to a laundry tub or large sink and holding it bottom up fill it with hot/warm water. Grasping the center section shake it vigorously and turn it upside down while shaking and a bunch of sh*t will come out. Repeat several times. 7) Dry thoroughly, you might use a hairdryer held to the center tube, but only if you can switch off the heat and use air only. Make sure its 200% dry, water will kill your machine 8) clean and replace the round perforated section 9) replace the fin section, I'd suggest pulling the round rubber part off of the fin part and setting it in place on the canister first, then follow with the plastic fin part. If you don't do it this way the rubber won't seat properly and the bottom lid won't close. 10) Close the lid, replace the canister, and staaaaaart suckin like it's brand new.

The Flange in question is about one inch tall and and approx 4 inches circular ..... When you pull the canister (container to empty) off and empty the contents in the trash .... some of us tap it to get the excess out or off the sides ..... That Flange is the rubber piece attached to the bottom of the darker gray cylinder inside the canister you are emptying. When you tap the canister or after dumping it numerous times that flange can work itself (slide) up the darker gray cylinder ...... it needs to be slid downward and overlap the bottom when you close the canister from dumping it. You can remove the flange and see the grooves .... replace it back on with it hanging off a little to allow for overlap. That should decrease the amount of excess being trapped in the filter. I inherited this Filter Queen "Cheetah" (but it isn't black ... chrome) and don't know how to empty the thing.

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The Filter Queen uses a cone filter and there are 2 or 3 clamps to release to remove the cone and then you dump the dirt sitting in the bottom of the canister and then replace the new cone filter and repeat the process. Stand in front of the vaccuum with the lable facing you, the 2 release levers are on the left and right sides, attached to the motor housing, which sits atop the tank/canister. Pull out and up on the levers, twist counter-clockwise, lift straight up and the motor housing will follow, leaving the tank/canister on the floor.
