For a half gallon of brewed coffee you should start with a "volume" measure of 10 oz. The reason I recommend a volume measure is because the weight could be completely different using light roast or dark roast coffees. Brewing by volume you can have consistency throughout. The main object is to have the same surface area of grounds for your brewing. The 10 oz. volume should equal between 3.75 and 4.25 ounces by weight. Adjust by taste to your palette but don't sway too low in amount of grounds, otherwise you will stand to "over-extract" and your coffee will taste bitter and will have no body or mouth-feel.
