Go here for the manual http://www.tomy.co.uk/_download/IZFHDBYX.pdf but all you need to do is squeeze the top while pulling the centre wheels forward. This releases the clip on clamps and the top lifts off. AA battery required.
This is an old manual. Do you know where to find the new one? We took all the screws off and some metal cylinders came out. Now the train won't work! Do you know how to put them back in?

My experience with Mavis: You have to unscrew the one "normal" screw (not the triangular ones). It won't come out, but that's OK. It screws into a metal retainer, not plastic; once it is actually loose, you can proceed to the next step. Now you must pull out the central false wheels, because these are what's preventing you from squeezing the side of the body so you can pull it up. You may need a screwdriver to prise the offending (and I do mean offending) item out; it is wedged in mighty tight, but there are no tabs or anything holding it in. Instructions supplied are abysmal and I was getting prepared to destroy the little b'stard!
