Laptops use the convenient touchpad and integrated scroll mouse that allow you to use just your finger to navigate Web pages, documents and open files and programs. Just like all other hardware, the laptop's integrated touchpad and mouse can experience errors and problems that cause you to lose functionality for a length of time. Whether the laptop's mouse is not working because of internal errors or conflicts with another device, several "tricks" can work to restore it.

Locate the function "Fn" button on your laptop in the lower left corner of the keyboard. Look in the keyboard's upper row (the F1 through F12 buttons) for an icon of a touchpad or computer mouse. This keyboard button acts as the toggle switch to enable and disable the built-in mouse and touchpad function. Press and hold the "Fn" button together with the mouse icon button. Look for the disable/enable symbol that briefly displays on your screen. Slide your finger over the laptop's mouse and attempt to use it as normal. Press the Windows keyboard key if using Windows 7, type "main.cpl" in the search box and press "Enter." Press the left arrow key to navigate over to the "Device Settings" tab. Press the tab key to reach the "Enable" button in this section. Press "Enter" on your keyboard. Press the tab key to reach the "Disable internal pointing device" check box. Press the space bar to remove the check mark. Put your finger on the touchpad, and move the pointer down to the "Apply" button. Click "Apply" to save the settings. Close the mouse "Properties" box. Press the keyboard "Windows" logo key to open the "Start Menu." Press the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate to the "Shut Down" or "Turn Off Computer" menu. Press the up or down arrow key to highlight "Restart." Press "Enter" to restart your computer and attempt to use the laptop mouse as it should normally function. Open the "Control Panel." Go to the "Add and Remove" or "Uninstall" programs section. Highlight any secondary mouse devices in the list that you have installed for your laptop, such as an external USB mouse. Select the "Uninstall" option to remove any software and settings associated with this secondary mouse. Restart your computer and attempt to use the built-in laptop mouse as normal. Check to see if the mouse is working properly. Press the keyboard's "Windows" button to open the "Start Menu." Press the keyboard's arrow keys, "Enter" button and "Tab" to navigate to and open the "Control Panel." Go to the "Hardware and Sound" section, and press "Enter." Navigate to "Device Manager," and press "Enter" to open it. Find "Mice and other pointing devices from the list" and open its "Properties" dialog box. Select the "Driver" tab and choose "Update Driver." Allow Windows to search the Internet for drivers and to update them automatically. Restart your computer after the drivers are updated, and use your mouse as normal.

I'm not sure if you'll be able to close the lid because you might need a laptop that is designed to work with a docking station to do that.

Anyway, you can hook an external monitor, usb keyboard, and usb mouse to the laptop and continue working as usual.

Make sure your mouse and keyboard are close to the receiver (the thing you plug into a usb port). Also make sure you plug the receiver into another usb port because maybe some of those ports are incompatible with the receiver or some ports may be failing. Last, make sure you install the driver (program that came on the cd for your equipment) on the computer.

This is assuming you are using Windows 7. (Since you didn't specify. -_-)

When you have the keyboard connect and the laptop plugged into the monitor, go to your Windows Mobility Center. Go to "Power Options. Look for "What to do when you close the lid." and tell it to do "Nothing".
Then close your laptop and lock it.

1. The solution for an erratic mouse involves going into the registry on Windows. Backup your registry files. Never make changes to the registry without doing this. Go back into the registry. Go to the editor. Locate the key phrase that reads: hkcu---control panel---mouse. Delete this line from the registry. Close the registry editor. Shut down your laptop. Wait for 5 minutes. Reboot your laptop. Windows will create a new registry key for you. This should solve any erratic mouse problems.

2. The laptop mouse is plugged in. You boot up your PC. The mouse isn't found. Chances are the mouse cable came slightly unplugged. Unplug the mouse. Re-plug the mouse into the laptop port. 3. A laptop mouse that is moving slowly is probably dirty. This type of equipment is prone to collecting dust and dirt. It's like a magnet for dirt. The solution is to clean the laptop mouse. Unplug the laptop mouse from the computer. Remove dirt particles from the optical mouse with a pair of tweezers. Make certain the eye area is clear. A small piece of debris can cause an optical mouse to move slowly. Remove the ball from the mouse, for a standard mouse. Wipe the ball with rubbing alcohol. 4. Clean the work area where you will use your laptop mouse. This will reduce the amount of dirt that collects in the mouse.
   
   Work in areas that don't have high traffic for pets. Sitting with your pet cat or dog in your lap and using your laptop is not a good idea. The laptop mouse will attract and catch pet hair and dander, requiring you to clean it more frequently.
   
   Wash your hands prior to using your laptop or your laptop mouse. This will keep the equipment cleaner to make it last longer. Less maintenance will be required for both the laptop and the laptop mouse.

Step 7 Wash off any remaining dirt, oil or debris from the keys. Use a cotton swab to clean inside of each key, if necessary. Rinse the keys very well with warm water and set them on a towel to dry.

Step 8 Replace the keys once the keyboard and keys are fully dry. If your keyboard is still sticky, fluid likely leaked deep inside the keyboard. You can attempt to clean the internal part of the keyboard by yourself, but this will void the warranty and risk further damage. Either purchase a new keyboard or send yours to the manufacturer for repair.

• Using a can of pressurized air to clean your keyboard will remove any loose dirt and debris but will not get rid of stickiness or oil residue. Take a photo of your keyboard before removing the keys to make replacement easier.

Is your back button stuck under the left click button? Mine did this, simply pry up on the let click button and it will release.

I would try plugging an external keyboard or mouse in to see if that works. If it does, either the keyboard/mouse (2 in 1 on laptops) drivers are invalid in which case you can go to http://support.acer.com and download the keyboard/mouse drivers and/or utility. Otherwise, most likely the keyboard/mouse hardware is the porblem. In which case either the cable connecting it to the rest of the laptop is loose or more likely the entire keyboard/mouse device is fried. I suggest contacting the manufacturer (Acer) and if your laptop is still under warranty get them to replace it; if not buy it. -The Tech Guy
