The answering system is set for the greeting mode. It will enter this state if the message memory is full or when the caller recording time is set to Greeting only.

To change the caller recording time from the handset, press Menu 0 6 2 then select the desired length of the recording. Then Save the setting and press Off.

If the phone is in this state, then delete messages from the unit. Then reset the caller recording time.

The phone lady thats answering the line,it that message through comcast or the GE answering machine? Also, whats the model number of the GE answering system?

Record Time sets the duration for recording the incoming messages. You have three
record time options. The options "1 minute" or "4 minutes" set the duration for
recording the incoming messages. "Announce only" answers the call but prevents
the caller from leaving a message.
1) Enter the Answ. Setup menu, and then the Record
Time submenu (see "Entering the Menu" on page 16).
2) Press volume up/down to select Record Time
(1 Minute, 4 Minutes, or Announce Only)
3) Press the OK soft key. You will hear a confirmation tone.

on many phones there is an ability that when the phone is picked up it is automatically connected to the caller and pressing the answer button is the same as hanging up
as for you second point , if a caller rings but hangs up before the message beep or after the beep but hangs up , there will be no message recorded

JUNK IT AND GET A PANASONIC.. THATS WHAT I DID. THIS GE PHONE IS THE WORST.

1a] press and hold down STOP/set button and wait for promps.....
ie. press NEXT to change Day stamp and then SET to pick.
ie. press NEXT to change Hour and SET to pick.
ie. press NEXT to change Minute and SET to pick.
1b] press NEXT to pick 1minute allowance recording for recieving messages coming in, or 2 minutes or 3 minutes or 4 minutes. This machine only has 1/2 hour of recording time, so maybe you can 'tell' -record- that and let incoming callers know they have only minutes and machine will automatically shut off and cut them off [hang-up] on them.
2] press and hold down Greeting button and follow promps to change the answering machine voice promps to your own voice. Machine will automatically PLAY BACK your voice, if you don't like what you hear, press and hold down Greeting button again and try again.

There is a problem with the machine take it back or send it in if it is in warranty. Or take it to a service center.

this problem is cause by excessive loop current from telco. the answer to this is to put a 600 ohm resistor in series with either tip or ring to the cable which feeds the answering machine. excessive loop current related issues can be the toughest problems to troubleshoot
