I have a powermate 5500 that shuts off after 10-15 minutes. I changed the oil, gas, spark plug and the filters. Help!!!

Fresh Fuel
Clean carburetor if stored with fuel in the tank and wasn't shut off
Clean fuel filter
Clean air filter
Proper oil level
Clean spark plug (just replace it, it is easier and faster)

Yes it wil not let you run your motorhome out of fuel they set it up that way so you dont strand yourself you may have a air bubble in the fuel line to the generator try blowing air generator fule line back into the tank

I hate to ask,is there oil in it?There's a shut off for low oil level,it's to save the engine from starving for oil.

You problem is likely either low on oil, a bad oil sensor, grounded (shorted) ignition circuit, or a misadjusted or bad magneto coil

make sure to read the full post before to procceed, ok?

When it stops I supposse you try to start it again. What happens??. 1.-Runs again or you have to wait until it cool's off ??
If it starts but stops in the next minute you may have a clogged gas filter.

2.-If it has no gas filter, then you migth be having armature problems, to check just unplug the spark plug and use another one making sure the metal part is in good contact wit the metal part, be really careful the engine is going to be really hot, so use gloves and ask someone to pull the cord as if it were to run and look for spark, If no spark check the oil level to be correct, if so, then let it cool and try for spark if there's spark then the problem is your armature.

3.- Prior to do ANYTHING make sure there's enough gasoline in the tank. You won't believe me but happens quite often.

What brand of engine & horsepower is it?Also about how long was it stored or last time it was run? The reason I ask is if it was stored with gas in it & a fuel stabilizer wasn't added to it,your primary jet is plugged in the carburetor(reason it will only run while choked).

Low oil doesn't usually make engines cut out. Clean the air filter, change the plug and wire. If this doesn't help then I think you're looking at a carb. problem. Probably just clogged jets & ports. It's very common on small engine carbs. It shouldn't take more than 2 quarts of oil. Probably not even one.

I have an HM100 on a 5500 watt gen with the same problem. This motor calls for a J17 spark plug, but I found using a J19 (hotter) plug solved the problem. I think the J17 doesn't get hot enough for a complete combustion burn so it act like fuel starvation thus resulting in the black sooty and wet plug.

Dump the fuel in the tank, get new gas and new oil and start over. Get a carbeurator cleaner additive for the gas as your carb. is dirty resulting in the sporatic operation.

A spray carb. cleaner that you squirt into the air intake by removing the air filter will also work for you. In fact, when you are getting the carb. cleaner get a new air cleaner and a new spark plug. get back and let me know how u make out.

Check the spark at the plug,the compression and carburation.Check and clean the gas and air filters.Disassembly thr carb and clean it with compressed air.Change the gas from gas tank and start the engine.
