NetGear RangeMax WPN824 Wireless Router (WPN824NAR) Logo
Anonymous Posted on Oct 06, 2010

I have just bought the WPN824N router from netgear. I tried the instalation through the Smart Wizard Setup and it was great. Very easy to configure. I used the wireless connection at home during the whole day without having any problems. The problems began whan I tried to use the wireless connection in the following day. My laptop could not find the any wireless signal from my router. I tried to configure it againg using the Smart Wizard Setup and after receiving many messages that the router could not be found I could make it work again. After a few minutes it stoped again and I could not configure it anymore. The power light is now amber and the test light is not turning on anymore. I tried to reset the router and the test light turned on and then turned off, as it should. The power light then was turned on in green. I tried to configure it again using the Smart Wizard Setup but it didn´t work. Now the power light is amber again and the test light is not turning on anymore. I tried to reset the router but it didn't work. Is it a problem of firmware? How can I fix it?

I think I tried everything. The smart wizard always makes a mistake when configuring my network. It assumes that my IP is fixed while in fact it is dinamic. I have to configure my network manually, otherwise it is not going to work for more than 10 minutes.
I managed to configure it 3 weeks ago manually and it stoped working again. I tried to reconfigure it manually and the router worked for 1 hour and died again. When a tried to restart the router it freezed and could not do the tests that are usually done in the starting process. The power light turned on amber and the router could do nothing more than that, I noticed that when it happens I must disconnect the router from the power and wait a few hours before trying to reconfigure ot again. If I try to do it before this "waiting period" the only thing that I will get from the router is an amber power light turned on. Now I will wait some time to try to reconfigure it manually and pray.

How to instal

Hi,
You'll wanna check out: ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WNR1000_SM_WW_23Jan09.pdf
Look for "installation"..
To help you set up your router and get on the Internet quickly, the Resource CD contains a Smart Wizard™ Installation Assistant. The Installation Assistant walks you through the steps required to connect your router, modem, and PC(s); configure your wireless settings; and enable wireless security for your network. When you have finished, you will be Internet ready!
You can set up your wireless router using one of two methods:
• Smart Wizard Setup: The Smart Wizard Installation Assistant setup is available on your Resource CD. See "Installing Your Router Using the Smart Wizard" on page 9 to use the Smart Wizard Installation Assistant.
- This is the easiest option. The wizard guides you through the setup process. It automates many of the steps and verifies that the steps have been successfully completed.
- Smart Wizard requires a PC running Microsoft Windows.
• Manual Setup: If you cannot or prefer not to use the Smart Wizard Installation Assistant, see "Manually Installing Your Router" on page 13. For example, if you are connecting to a Mac, are using a Linux operating system, or are technically knowledgeable, select this option. If you choose to use this option and install your router manually, for best results, install and set up your router in this order:
Failure to follow these guidelines can result in significant performance degradation or an inability to wirelessly connect to the Internet.
NETGEAR does not recommend or support adding a NETGEAR router behind another router, or replacing a gateway with a a NETGEAR router.
If you have a Macintosh or Linux system, you must use the manual installation method (see "Manually Installing Your Router" on page 13).Getting to Know Your Wireless Router 7
1. Install and connect your wireless router to your network (see "Connecting Your Wireless Router" on page 14).
2. Set up your wireless router for Internet access (see "Setting Up Your Router for Internet Access" on page 18).
3. Configure your wireless network and select wireless security settings to protect your wireless network (see "Configuring Your Wireless Network" on page 21)

Lost or Unable to use Router Configuration CD NETGEAR does not replace lost or broken CDs because the Smart Wizard installation and configuration utility on the CD is already built into your router management software. There is no need to download anything to replace the CD - everything you need is in your router. This is true even if:
  • the CD that shipped with the router has been lost or cannot be read, or
  • errors occur when running the configuration program, or
  • the router is not connected to a computer using the Windows operating system.

To access the Smart Wizard installation and configuration program on your router:
  1. Connect your router to a computer by plugging one end of an Ethernet Cable into any of the four LAN ports on the back of your router.
  2. Log in to your NETGEAR router by browsing to http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com. Enter the username (admin) and password. By default, the password is password or 1234 unless it has already been changed.

I lost my password to my netgear. How can I retrieve it?

Go to NETGEAR Router.

After connecting the Router into your network, you must configure it. You can do this using the Smart Setup Wizard -- where the wizard will attempt to auto-detect the type of Internet service you have through your ISP -- or you can configure the router manually. It is recommended that, if you aren't used to setting up Internet connections, you let the Smart Setup Wizard do some of the work for you.
To configure the router, you'll use the information that you filled out earlier in the Installation Guide.
To get started:
  1. Select Yes if you want to use the Smart Setup Wizard.
    or
Select No to configure the router manually.
  2. Click Next.
