hy this can be a fan problem over heating with a lot of dust hair and all sorts clogging the fan to run sufficiently advice if your techs strip it down and clean mother board with an antistatic cleaner all compaq &hp are all the same way 2 strip down and rebuild can be a bit of a pain if you not very technoly minded
Unassemble the fan and see if there is a lot of dirt and dust in there. If the fan is NOT working you need to fix that issue before you do anything else. Does the computer randomly shut down ?
Since u said that ur screen flashed and also u said that when u connected an external VGA nothing would display so from these two i can tell you that it is a hardware problem and that too with the VGA card/display card.
