Self defrosting / but there is ice in the bottom

Your kemore self defrost is not working. 1. clean the ice and look for the heater element and your lemi switch.

The refrigerator is supposed to self-defrost approximately four times in every 24 hour period. If one of the components in the self-defrosting system fails, the refrigerator continues to try to cool. Eventually, though, so much frost builds up on the evaporator coils that the circulating fan can't draw air over the coils. There may still be a small amount of cooling because the coils are icy, but with no air flow over the coils, cooling in the refrigerator compartment is quite limited. Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils. You can't see these coils without removing a panel on the inside of your freezer. A sure sign that there is a build-up is the presence of any frost or ice build-up on the inside walls, floor, or ceiling of the freezer. Such a frost build-up usually indicates a problem in the self-defrosting system or damaged door gaskets.Here's an inexpensive, though inconvenient, way to determine if the problem is with the self-defrosting system. Remove all of the perishable food from the refrigerator and freezer, turn the thermostat in the refrigerator to Off, and leave the doors open for 24 to 48 hours. (Be sure to have several towels ready in case the melting frost and ice causes the drip pan to overflow). This allows the refrigerator to defrost "manually." When the frost and ice build-up has completely melted away, turn the thermostat back to a normal setting. If the refrigerator then cools properly, it indicates a problem with one of three components in the self-defrosting system: The defrost timer The defrost thermostat (also called the bi-metal switch) The defrost heater. You have a defrost drain that is plugged.You need to locate it and clean it out. Hope this helps.

the drain is clogged most likely...remove lower shelves, baskets, remove rear panel if self defrosting.. find the drain hole and use a hair dryer or hot water to defrost ice..once the surface ice is off...you will need to make sure there is no ice in drain tube going down under freezer. use a squeeze bottle with hot water and force it into drain. do this repeatly until water runs free down drain....Bruce Denton

check out the drainage hole if it is properly closed.

Hello. If your freezer is not a self defroster, you must have had a power failure for a few hours that caused a melt with water ending up on the floor of the freezer and then refreezing. IF you have a self-defrost model, your defrost cycle produces some water which should make it's way down to the evaporator tray just above the floor... in your case, the small hole in the floor is plugged and the water is accumulating on the floor rather than making it's way to the evaporator tray. The fix is to clean the evaporator tray, defrost the ice with a blow dryer, locate the hole and clean it out with a couple of pipe cleaners or cotton swabs. Regards, Joe

The excess frost in those areas is probably caused by leaky door gasket seals. They should be tight enough to hold a dollar bill securely all the way around. A defrost problem would start on the coils behind the back cover inside the freezer and would also appear on the back wall before it did on the door edges.

Was the door left open for a long period of time.? Sometimes this causes so much ice that it re freezes and can't clear the drain. The only solution is to unplug and let sit with doors open for at least 24 hours. to get all the ice off the coils. Then use a pipe cleaner on the drain then use a turkey baster to force water through. then a mild bleach solution. Check the door gaskets if they are ripped or loose or the door warped and not sealing tight this will also cause this problem. If this still doesn' t solve the problem it is probably a defrost problem Usually the timer or defrost thermostat.

You should check the drain hose inside underneath the freezer.This is done at the back down below. Mine was looped too high and water could not get out. I took the loop off that was holding the hose and now water can drain away without freezing. You can pour warm water down the drain hole to melt the ice in the tube if you remove the grate covering it inside the freezer. I have read that several Kenmore upright freezer
owners have the same problem. I was astonished that this was the problem and I had put up with it for too long, defrosting the freezer every 2-3 months!.Give it a try!
